Matt Gatens Will Be GA for Bruce Pearl at Auburn

I would rather have Gatens as a GA then Oglesby. Hopefully a path opens up in the future for Gatens to return to Iowa City. I remember 2 basketball seasons that Gatens was really the only reason I watched. Licklitter really screwed Gatens over. Imagine what Fran could have done with him in a full 4 years....jeez.

We don't really know what any of these ex-Hawks bring to the table as GA's. Oglesby may be doing a great job for McCaffery. Their value as a coaching assistant might have little correlation to their playing career.

Oglesgy took quite a bit of crap from fans during his playing days so I feel happy that he managed to block all that out and had a good enough experience to come back here and GA under Fran. He grew up a coach's kid which I always thought showed in his floor game as he seemed to have good court awareness. Might have a very bright future as a coach.

As to Matt happy to see him get on with starting a coaching career and he could do worse than get his start down here in SEC land. I've never liked Pearl much but basketball in this part of the country as I live in Florida seems on the rise which we saw last season with well coached teams in Florida and South Carolina. It might do Matt good to get away from Iowa and start his track in another part of the country and he can always come back to Iowa down the road if he desires to.

Gatens certainly has learned how not to coach and recruit from his own college coach the first three years of his career. That could be invaluable for his future.
