Maryland/Rutgers addition due to PSU

Some twitter reports coming out that Barry revealed today that Delaney added the two new schools because PSU was threatening leaving the league unless the B1G expanded into the east/northeast.

Rittenberg/Bennett ‏@ESPN_BigTen RT @jaypo1961: #Badgers AD B.Alvarez tells athletic bd Delany thought Penn State might leave BIG if no expansion into northeast.

Rittenberg/Bennett ‏@ESPN_BigTen
RT @jaypo1961: (cont)...That is why Rutgers/Maryland were added to league. Alvarez: 1 other school wanted in. Turned down (academics).

Interesting that PSU had that much weight to throw around, especially with the black eye their little hidden pedophile gave the conference.

Even with that, the B1G losing a team would be huge in terms of $$$$. There is no way they would get the kind of money that they want if PSU were to leave.

Barry tends to be a big- mouth. I am very skeptical of this rumor. Sure, PSU probably wanted eastern rivals, and Delany wanted to keep them happy, but that is far down the list of reasons why these schools were added. The BTN owns TV rights for PSU for the next 20+ years....why would any other league want them without their TV rights? And considering the wounded nature of the PSU program right now, does anyone really think they wanted to opt out of the richest league right now? 43 million/yr helps pay off a lot of victims of Sandusky.

The old man had too much wine.....Barry likes his wine.

Yeah........... this seems like B.S. I find it hard to believe that Penn St had any weight to throw around. They just had a huge scandal, got slapped with huge sanctions, and regardless the B1G still owns their TV rights. Of course on the other hand why the fack would Alvarez say such a thing?

Barry also said today that, "When I gave Brett B. the head coaching job at Wisconsin, I gave him an established, solid program. He was able to maintain my program for the seven years he was here."

He also commented that he, Barry, was largely responsible for Paul Chryst gettng the Pitt job and that "I didn't think it would be right to try to get him away from Pitt."

And now he will coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl, but assured everyone that he was not going to stay on as the head coach. Gee, thanks Barry.

What a jerk.

Not sure why that, of all things, makes him a jerk.

I agree with previous posters that Barry likes to hear himself talk and needs to zip it for the betterment of the conference, but praising an out-going coach and stating that he is not pursuing a particular coach would be pretty far down on my list of things that establishes someone as a jerk.

I guess I was not clear in my post. Barry's comment about BB came off, in my opinion, not as a compliment but as a shot at BB; Barry made sure everyone knew that HE built the program and BB just maintained what was already there. Also, Barry takes credit for, again in my opinion, Chryst getting the Pitt job...not that Chryst got the job because of his own skill set. That is why I labeled him a jerk. Since my initial post, Barry has assigned a large number of $ to himself for coaching in the Rose Bowl. Judge for yourself whether that is appropriate for someone making a cool million $ in salary.

Shocker, Barry has an inflated sense of his own importance and has never met a microphone he did not try to swallow. The more I hear from him, the more I can understand why BB wanted to get the hell away from that egomaniac. Speaking of egomaniacs, I am shocked Delaney has not broken his foot off in Barry's *** for his contantly trying to hog the spotlight.

Got it. The arrogance didn't stand out to me in your post, but I can see where you were coming from when I read that back into your post.
