Maryland facts

We need to figure out how to stop Maryland’s running game. Maryland had 315 yards rushing and 8.5 ypc against Minnesota. How did that happen? Minnesota has a pretty good front 7 on D. IKM only had like 2.5 ypc against Minny. Maybe a game to unleash Amani Jones.

Personally, I think they should turn Amani Jones into a fullback. If he can catch...I say make him a fullback. That dude just wants to wreck people. Can you imagine a linebacker off balance fighting off an Amani Jones block only to then see Toren Young barreling down on him. I'm telling you Jones would move people out of the way. I'm just not sure he's going to be able to control his excitement. At LB, his feet are dancing around prior to the snap like he just can't wait to hit someone. You have to diagnose things at LB. At fullback, you obviously need to know who your assignment is...but in short yardage you could tell him to just go make a hole.

Maryland has athletes at running back...and their offensive line appears to be pretty damn physical. They manhandled Minnesota...but they did have some long runs that skewed the numbers a bit. This is another good test.

I keep telling myself that someone is going to exploit our defense in the running game based on the injuries at LB and the freshmen corners...but Minnesota and Indiana couldn't do it. This is a tougher test against Maryland.

Maryland numbers through October 13, rush defense rank 22nd, pass yardage allowed 70th
Passing offense 123rd, rush offense 21st.

It looks like another game on offense of Young and Sargent/IKM maybe going straight at them in the run game. If their defense is fast then dont run wide too much but pound them and see if they cave.

But also lots of first down and play action pass if they are 70th in pass yards allowed.

Yep the hawk defense will need to buckle both strap points on each side of the helmet. Not sure if Maryland has a big power back but their QBs and other people have speed so the edge will need to be totally set. Have to play run first then be ready for what seems to be a weak passing attack.

Yep. Back to our traditional 4-3.

Ojemudia is said to be a good tackler, so maybe getting OJ and Hankins back on the field would be good.

Yes, good point. OJ and Hankins really helped out in the ISU games and others. They may need to start or play a lot in this game.

Colbert and Hooker at Lbkr not bad also for having some speed along with the back 4.

Something tells me Phil Parker will have them ready and have a good game plan. My guess is that we set up to stop the run and force them to beat us throwing the ball. Can they be accurate in press coverage and pressure? Their QB is definitely a runner though...so we can't allow him to beat us running when he can't' find anyone open.

They run a version of RPO right? We don't usually have much trouble stopping that. The end stay home and we will slow that run game.

It was said that the goofers whiffed on a lot of tackles and that's why they spent the whole week on the running game and tackling. I think it worked because we couldn't run on them and OSU had problems also.

FACT: The host of the night time edition of Sportscenter will never stop talking about Maryland. FACT!

I just watched first half of Maryland vs Texas on you tube and the terps are explosive, lots of jet sweep and runs to the edge, some delayed handoffs against oncoming rushers . But their QB looked pretty darn good throwing the ball so the hawks have to guard that more than I thougth looking at their team stats.

Texas on offense did not have much luck running wide or on a reverse as Maryland's speed ran them down. but Texas had good results running straight at the terps and throwing play action down the middle.

I hope the hawks do like they did agaisnt IU which is pound it at them and find the seams to throw it into.

This will be tougher than I was expecting.
