Martin-Manley never tackled?

I'm watching the game today and something I didn't notice at the game was that on Iowa's final drive before half there was a play that caught my eye. A pass down the middle to Martin-Manley and the defensive player puts a body to him and spins to the ground. Thing is he never was down. He though assumed he was and the play stopped. He had some room to run had he continued to do so. Iowa scored nonetheless but that is something that shouldn't happen. Never assume you're down. That is something they will catch while watching film and will definitely be corrected. I was just surprised to see this as were Danan Hughes and Kevin Kugler. Equally surprised there aren't 5 threads on this already.

I thought that when I saw it at the game. Havent watched the replay yet, but I'm sure the coaching staff will have some words with him about running till you hear a whistle.

It was pretty clear that his right elbow was down. Additionally, the back of his left wrist hit the ground too. Both the elbow and the back of the wrist resulted in the player being down.

Had the palm of his hand touched the ground then (and assuming the elbow hadn't touched) then he would not be down.

It was the correct call.

With that said, KMM should have continued on with the play. He's young and will learn from the mistake.

I would suspect the coaches will give him a talking about that. Had a possibility of being a bad situation.

His elbows were down and that equals a knee. In addition what makes you think there wasn't a whistle.

his elbow hit the ground, he was down, good call, although the refs did screw up on the trick pass play that led to a score on the O-line being downfield,

Hard to truly tell on tv replay even in slow-mo if his elbow did go down. Was it his forearm that was carrying the ball? Hard to tell without the benefit of all the angles of replay. Still a tough play. And will be something they will remind them that to never assume you are down.

but, and no one has mentioned it yet, was his elbow down? cuz that would make him down. maybe someone on this board knows...

Regardless of the elbow being down or not, the back of the ball hand was down. That means he was down. This is so in order to keep the ground from causing a fumble.
