Martin-Manley: 'I Have to Step Up'

I'm hoping it does pick up with Davis. I am pretty intrigued with the 3 incoming freshmen in Tevaun Smith, Greg Mabin, and Cam Wilson. You never know until they start playing at the D1 level, but these guys seems to have a little more speed and athleticism than some of the wr's currently on the roster. Tevaun's speed is especially intriguing to me. I'm also hoping for Cotton and Shumpert to rise up this year.

Martin-Manley was impressive in the Pitt game last year. He had some flashes that showed he has a lot of potential. Hopefully he and "stone hands" Davis can both break out this year.

As far as recruiting is concerned, I personally have to see what the passing game is going to look like under Davis before I am willing to say we will get higher caliber receivers. In the KOK version of the Iowa offense, I can see why 4* recruits weren't falling over themselves to come to Iowa City.

Hope Staggs shakes off his injury. Only receiver on the team to not drop a pass last year. He made the most of his limited touches. I can see this guy being the 3rd option @ WR behind KD and Kmart. Just runs down the sideline past the 1st down marker, turns, catches the ball and steps out of bounds. Simple. He looked good in traffic and uses his body, like Moeaki, to deny defenders the chance to get to the ball. At 6-3 a lot to like even if he doesn't have break away speed.

I hope to see Shumpert step up and show good hands, he has McNutt size and I heard he is a freak athlete, just has to catch the ball. Also Flemming switching to WR is very interesting, but I think that will take a few years to develop.

Yes. The only way Iowa is going to get better wr's with Davis is if the passing attack improves under his watch.

Yeah, kind of like an Ed Hinkel type player. Great hands and runs good routes. We could definitely use someone this year who was as sure-handed as Eddy. Miss that guy.

Tough as nails too, remember when he broke his arm? Just kinda ran off the field w/ it hanging by his side. Am I wrong in thinking he played later in the season w/ a cast on his wrist?

Staggs is intriguing to me. When both him and Sash played for Osky I lived with a patio right over the football stadium, best seat in the house. He was never a dominating player in H.S. the way Sash was, but he looked to be more athletic. I don't think I would sleep on his speed either. He may not be quick, but he is fast (kinda like Brodell) if he gets a step on someone he has the ability to take it to the house. Thing is now we do have better WR talent so players like SS will not see the field as much. I do think if he is given the opportunity he will surprise people, but it will require an injury or 2 to make it happen. Also, he is slight of build and doesn't seem to be the type of player who can add much weight so he can be out matched physically, but in a slot situation where he doesn't have to beat jams he could make plays.

Well atleast KMM realizes the opportunity he has. I believe KMM's production will play a more critical role in the success of Iowa's offense more so than even KD's will. The slot receiver has always played a huge role in the offense Greg Davis runs. With the lack of talent at the WR position, I think the slot receiver role will be even more vital in the upcoming year.

Hopefully we can look back on this topic after the season and realize he stepped up admirably.

I think CJF and Hamilton both have really good years from the TE position.
I'm saying Moeaki/Reisner type combo season

Has Hamilton passed Derby on the depth chart? I think the kid has a great future at Iowa, but the depth charts I've always seen have Derby listed with CJ as the starters. Obviously, the depth chart during the spring and summer doesn't really mean a damn thing in Ferentz's program.

If he can remain healthly KMM will be as good as we have seen under Davis. I am hoping to see one of our more promising tight ends move into the slot later in the year and do some real damage down field.

Me too. honestly, he is my surprise pick for this year. Besides his fumble he looked great in the spring game. Very fast and athletic with good hands. I think he might be the next breakout player if given Tue chance. Heard it here first, mark my words.

Dude, did you count the number of passes Shumpert dropped during the spring practice scrimmage? He definitely did NOT display "good hands."

Well he showed good hands on making some athletic catches. He showed promise, his athleticism can't be taught, and he made some good airborne catches.

One thing is for sure and that is that the WRs production this year is predicated on JVB's performance. Davis has shown the ability to work w/ and develop great QBs while at Texas.

I would love to see something like the McCoy-Shipley synergy develop between JVB and one of the WRs or TEs this year. I don't think that kind of thing can be taught and I hope that Davis can, first, recognize it and, second, let it bloom should it start to happen.

if kmm can step up like keenan did. and cjf makes the improvements it sounds like he is making. along with the pass catching ability out of the backfield. i feel like the passing game will be very solid.
