Maddon and Gallant coaching philosophy vs Kirk.

Joe Maddon MLB and Gerard Gallant, Vegas Knights - their philosophy of getting the best out of players and winning follows:

"I believe in freedom. I don't believe in over-managing. I don't believe in micromanaging. I believe in players being players, players being themselves, playing without restrictions. I never want to coach instincts out of you. I want your instincts to soar. The more you restrict freedom, the more you restrict creativity. To restrict creativity, which a lot of people do unknowingly, you are losing out on a tremendous opportunity to find out how good someone is."

Would Kirk be well served to buy into this philosophy of coaching, just a bit? Is Kirk the opposite of the above? Are QBs and other skill players coached by "Kirk's way" into missing out on their instincts and talents, which often take over during a close game. Is more freedom and instinct a key to being what Iowa hasn't been?

Thoughts?

Using Joe Maddon in your example pretty much doomed your post from the get-go.

Aside from the name Maddon, what is your view of the coaching philosophy? I think he has two World Series rings as well, not much of a doomed career.

He damn near cost the Cubs that WS in 2016. He has no idea how to use his rotation or bullpen. Other than that...

And give that 2016 WS to the Cubs front office...and checkbook...

Well if he has NO IDEA about how to use his bullpen or rotation, he has ZERO chance of being hired again or even being offered an interview. We will see how that plays out. You could be right!

What are your thoughts on the seemingly opposing philosophies of coaching...one of strict control and predictability, the other allowing and encouraging more freedom and individual instincts during a game, for assistant coaches and players?

Well, if you have O$U- or Alabama-level talent, fine. If you have Rutgers-level talent, maybe. But for the majority of teams in the :middle", it's about honing a system and sticking to it, personal opinion.

That's logical and fair enough...however Iowa seems to have some skills talent and I wonder if a "stifled-scripted" expectation limits their abilities to make plays in the ebb and flow of a game (where they can be won). I would think it is quite frustrating and could keep away the talent Iowa needs to be more than what it is. Thinking "on the fly" isn't an attribute that belongs to KF nor to those he mentors, either on the staff or on the field.

I agree with your notion of allowing player freedom of instinct at the qb position. Its not a one or the other thing, i think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Players like favre who were the ultimate creative guys, or an example now like russell wilson, who is patently creative with his instincts during games also has some reigning in that coaches have done to make them better. They pick their times and opportunities to be creative, and times to stay in the pocket and follow the plan, until the plan breaks down and that's when you go freestyle. Ferentz is obviously a mitigate risk coach, so is belichek and he's the best coach in the history of the nfl. Brady for the most part follows the system to a T but has just mastered every nuance of it. Belichick's guys are highly managed. That's why it works. I think there's an inbetween which is the ultimate goal, to reach that balance.

Anaheim fired their manager after one year approximately ten seconds after Maddon became available......

Maddon unnecessarily burned out Chapman's arm in that WS. He also tried to script game 7.

Didn't matter. Cubs had enough talent to overcome. Sparky Anderson did everything, and I mean everything, he could to hand the 1975 world series over to the Red Sox and Reds still have enough talent to overcome.

Maddon still had to push the right buttons just to get to the WS. Like their stirring ninth inning comeback to eliminate the Giants. Or inserting Miguel Montero to hit a pinch hit grand slam bomb against the Dodgers.

Cubs won in 2016 because they had enough depth in their farm system to address short term weaknesses. Maddon has actually done some of his best managing jobs in other years.
