Lisa Bluder on Pat Summitt's Passing

What a loss. Pat Summitt was the greatest coach of all time. It's hard to believe she's gone and will be missed greatly. RIP Pat......

I met her once at a coaching clinic. What a class act. She's a HOF coach and she treated me as if I was her equal. Which I most certainly am not.

Wow, just 64. kinda scary.

Not making light of her passing at all because it is a shame. Great coach and did a lot for the women's game.

I have to remark though on the irony of this tragedy. Had this been a former football player with the same health issue it would have added to the public outcry against contact sports. Yet here we are with an individual who as far as we know did not participate in football or another contact sport but developed early onset dimentia, etc. How is that even possible as I thought this could only happen as a result of playing football? Where is the call to check her brain for CTE?

In '11, she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. It worsened. My grandmother had it before dying. Nasty disease.

I don't think there's any parallel between what happened to Pat Summitt and concussions in football. Perhaps I'm missing it.

I probably did not make my point of irony clear enough. Had this been a former football player that developed this same condition at a similar age there would be an outcry right now that playing football caused this. The point is very limited research on a complicated area of the human body is making a direct correlation to concussions and head trama from playing contact sports when similar degenerative conditions occur without participation in contact sports as evidenced by coach Summit.

Not trying to stir it up...but "very limited research"? There's no part of the human anatomy more researched than the brain.

Have you taken the time to read through some of the research studies? Determination of the subjects, how they were selected, what the control groups were, see what the analysis was of any other contributing factors and then read conclusions that can be full of more speculation and guess work than concrete answers. But if it fits an agenda,,, then it will be run with.

We have gotten to the point in this society that no one questions research. It's accepted as fact because it's research..... until .... someone finally looks at the research and finds issues with the research. Does a new study that firmly disproves the validity of the intial research.

No more eating eggs, autism caused by vaccines, global warming, etc., etc. There are hundreds of debunked research studies.

Been a part of a major university research project. USDA funded most, but there were minor funders. They didn't like the results. The results weren't published. State universities are hurting for money. Unbiased research is hard to come by.
