Linebacking core next year

We are losing a lot of leadership, but one thing I have noticed in recent years, boys Iowa is getting deeper and deeper. We are starting to be able to not have to rebuild but plug people in like the Ohio States, USC's, and Floridas. I am not saying we are to that level, but we have quality guys everywhere. My question is will we see Tyler Nielsen, the speedster out of Humboldt, Ia make his way on to the field as a starting LB next year. May be the fastest LB Ferentz has ever had.

Fastest LB Ferentz has ever had is quite a statement, given the speed of the two we are losing this year, let alone the ones from the past. I think Angerer's speed would surprise you.

Edds is probably the 2nd best linebacker Ferentz has had behind Greenway--don't be surprised if he is an AllPro in the NFL. He's like having an extra safety in passing downs and a LB on running downs. I can hardly wait to see him blitz at the next level!

I think Nielson's athleticism will make him be very successful. There will be a drop off to some degree if only b/c Edds was a 4 yr starter, but it very well may be a, "AJ Hawk leaves, in steps Laurinitis" kind of situation.

There will be less of noticed difference at MIKE. We will miss Angerer's pass coverage abilities more than anything.

I think their will be battles for starting jobs just like the OLine: look for the battle to be between Bruce Davis, Troy Johnson, Jeff Tarpinian, and Tyler Nielsen then possibly the freshman in the mix I've heard James Morris (Solon) could very well be a starter as a true feshman, however I don't see that happening. With that said I think the starters will be Troy Johnson LEO, Bruce Davis MIKE (Love from what I have seen from this kid), and Hunter will continue to start.

If you go with raw talent I think if the Solon kid can focus his energy on one position he will be an All-American. He's been a STAR since he was a freshman.

What was Nielson's 40? He's the one from the ARMY game right?

Do you think Tillison on his return will try to stay at LB or shift back to DB. He is starting back to school this semester.

I agree that Edds value is under appreciated.

Edds was the vocal senior leader on Defense like Mitch King last year.

He will be sorely missed......but I wonder who steps up and becomes that vocal senior leader on defense next year.

Starters next year

Hunter OLB
Nielsen MLB
Tarpinian OLB

Don't be surprised to see Hunter possibly moved inside to MLB as well

Let's not forget about Troy Johnson...all he did was step in as a little known backup and after one start he had one "Big10 Defensive Player of the Week" Award...

Bet Angerer runs like a 4.8 40. Also hear his speed is the one thing that NFL scouts are questioning.

I bet you are wrong.

Wasn't he electronically timed within the last year, maybe last year's pro-day, or something like that? Speed is why he will be an NFL player.

I'm pulling for him but if Abdul Hodge isn't a difference maker in the NFL I can't see Angerer lasting long.

And for my own selfish reasons I want to see him in the UFC.

Jon, re Edds.

I would have totally agreed with you at the start of the season. Let me say I think he will play on Sundays too.

I still think Edds is good, but why were his tackle numbers not anything approaching Greenway's? We run the same defense as we did then. And the rest of the defense with Edds is not any better than it was with Greenway. I have not been able to figure out why his number of tackles over the course of this season were not greater and I am at a loss to explain it.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me? And don't tell me Angerer took too many tackles that would have otherwise been his. Greenway had Hodge right next to him and they both got that many tackles.

Greenway played the weakside, Edds played the Leo. basically with all of the spread teams the Hawks faced he was a hybrid nickel back/ linebacker. He was the first lb to successfully cover wrs. If he did his job successfully his number is never called. Iowa faced more running teams when Hodge and Greenway played and they were able to pile up tackles, plus this defense piled up incomplete passes and 3 and outs like few units.
