Let's talk B-Ball Rotations

It's been a rough bye week in Hawkeye land for the football team. Which has made my mind wander to basketball because I hate being negative all the time. So I figured I'd get some hoops talk going by bringing up a couple points I've been pondering myself....

It has been said that Sapp, Mike, JU, White, and Woodbury was the starting line-up for the Creighton scrimmage. Assuming that's who Fran does decide to start then that would make Olaseni, Oglesby, Dickerson, and Jok the first players to come off the bench. Maybe Uhl gets some action as well depending on how far along he is. When I first read that starting line-up I thought to myself that it would be nice to see both Woodbury and Olaseni in the starting rotation together, but then I realized that would push White out to the 3 and it seems as if most agree he's better suited as a 4 match-up wise. Obviously he has to be one of the starters so I understand bringing in Olaseni off the bench.

Fran has said he isn't going to be afraid to play both Woodbury and Olaseni together. That would give the Hawks a couple of big dudes down low and I think it would cause fits for teams who try to drive to the bucket or post up a lot. The main question I have is what do you think the Hawks do with the rotation when they play the two big guys together? Who will be the go to 3 man in that instance? I could see White moving to the 3 and Uthoff taking a seat. Or do they leave Uthoff at the 3 and let White get some rest? I can't really picture them moving Uthoff to the 2 and White to the 3 in order to keep them both on the floor simply because JU just doesn't seem quick enough to play the 2 position. Someone is going to have to sit.

It will probably be a combination of both White and Uthoff getting some rest, but I thought it would be a good way to get some bball discussion going. Any thoughts on this or other possible rotations?

I think it's interesting that JO might be coming off the bench, but he played that roll pretty well last season. Kind of a spark plug and instant offense at times when he came in, so Fran is probably comfortable with doing that and with how Josh shot it last season, I would think he's comfortable with it too. With all the weird subbing and rotations Fran went with last season, I'm just hopeful that our best 5 get the majority of the minutes this season.

I like Olaseni coming in first for Woody, then Woody coming in for White a few minutes later and shifting Gabe to the 4. Makes for a nice 3 man rotation. When both bigs are in it would be nice to have Oges and Jok at the 2 and 3 to spread the floor and TD or AC running point for some quick drive and dishes. Love getting some basketball talk going OP.

If neither Oges or Jok start, what do you guys think will happen with getting both guys minutes? Maybe both on the floor at the same time? Or 1 guy ends up not getting many? I love it if AC became a top 5 player over the summer.

Has Fran said whether or not MG is going to get minutes at PG this season or has the decision been made to keep him strictly at the 2 and let AC and TD share the minutes at point?

I'm anxious to see the guard play at the beginning of the season. Admittedly I have seen very little of TD so I'm not sure what to expect out of him. I don't pay a lot of attention to the Prime Time League. AC showed flashes a couple years ago, but he really seemed to lose confidence last year. I remember two years ago he had some plays where it seemed like he could just get to the rim in an instant. That's what the Hawks need. I don't know if they get that more out of TD or AC. A guy at point who can drive and finish or kick it out will really help open things up offensively.

Looks like Mike G is starting there, at least in the exhibition game.

McCaffery acknowledged a few dinged-up players three days after a closed scrimmage against Creighton that the coach couldn't talk about. But if and when healthy,
the starting five is basically 80 percent set: Mike Gesell, TBA, Jarrod Uthoff, Aaron White and Adam Woodbury.

Gesell mans the point, the "1" position. No surprise there, he started all 33 games there as a sophomore.

"Mike has been really good," McCaffery said.

I think Olesani and Uthoff should basically split the 8-10 minutes game White doesn't play. The rotation for the "bigs" would then be Woodbury and Oleasani splitting the 5, White playing 30-32 minutes at the 4, and Uthoff and Oleasni splitting minutes at the 4 when White is out.

Olesani and Woodbury together might limit our spacing on the offensive end. But could be useful against teams that attack the rim or are susceptible to give up offensive rebounding.

I don't mind bringing JO and/or Jok off the bench as instant offense/shooting. I also don't mind starting Clemmons off-ball as I think he will play better off-ball with better players around him. He has an athletic quality that is better than most of this team. It also leaves a lot of offense on the bench though.

When you say the best 5 should get the majority of the minutes think about the spurs, their coach realizes the season is very long, which is hard mentall and physically on the players. In the long run, watching players minutes is something that can help people (especially college students) avoid becoming rundown, both physically and mentally.

5- 24 Woody 16 GO
4- 30 White 4 GO 4 Uthoff 2 Uhl
3- 24 Uthoff 7 Jok 7 JO 2 Ulh
2- 15 Jok15 JO 8 Gesell 2 AC
1- 18 Gesell 10 AC 12 TD

I see Woody getting 25 at the 5, White 25 at the 4, Gabe 15 at the 5 $ 10 at the 4, Uhl 5 at the 4, Jarrod 25 at the 3, Jok 15 at the 3 This is where it get interesting. I think Gessel get at least 25 betwwen the 1& 2 and Josh O. gets at least 15 at the 2 after that I think its a dog fight. I belive Trey is going to have to take it away from Sapp. He is going to give up otherwise

I think they should matchup the backcourt based off of who they are playing against. If going small and going with either Sapp or TD in there along with MG against who they are playing do it. If they think they have an advantage with JO or Jok then start them. The front court is pretty much set. Just a matter of how much Gabe plays and how much with Woody at the same time. I'm not one that thinks having the same lineup with the same mins being spread like robots is a good thing. Makes us a cookie cutter team to scout. I say mix it up and play hot hands. The only thing I'm not crazy about in starting a small lineup is they'll probably play more zone D.... We seem to stink at that. Give up too many open looks and can't rebound as well in it either.

1. Gesell 20, Clemmons/Dickerson 20
2. JO 20, Jok 15, Gesell 5
3. Uthoff 25, Jok 10, White 5
4. White 25, Olaseni 10, Uthoff/Uhl 5
5. Woody 25, Olaseni 15

To start the season.

Here's what I'd like to see...

Mikey
Jok
Uthoff
White
Woody

First subs:
Olaseni comes in for Woody
Ogelsby comes in for Jok
Sapp/Dickerson for Mikey

Second Subs:
Woody comes in for White which moves Gabe to the 4
Jok comes back in for Uthoff and plays the 3

Back to starters

This makes some sense. And if Woodbury is in foul trouble, you leave Olaseni at the 5 and you bring in Uhl at the 4.

I've heard Fran say Uhl is more of a 3 than a 4. Who knows if it will actually play out that way tho. I wonder who the better 4 will be between Uhl and Uthoff.

I think JU and Jok need to be in the top 3 in minutes played. I really believe they're both that talented. You know White will probably lead in minutes. Going to be interesting to see how MG is used at the beginning and then at the end of the season. I think he winds up moving closer to a 2 permanently. He'll be needed there next season, along with Jok.

I would also like to see some fast breaks with GO, Aaron, JU, Jok and TD on the floor. Man, that is lighting quick speed running the floor.

I hadn't even thought of the best lineup for fast breaks. That's got me pretty pumped.

Yeah, I really like this teams potential. If we can get 22-25 points and 15-18 boards (combined) from Woody and GO, that will be a big, big boost. But, this team is made for running more than last years. It could be a very, very exciting season watching this team come into their own.

They look a lot more potent than last years team.
