Let's just all take a deep breath

Considering that Barta's job is likely on the line with this hire, did you really expect him to just jump out at the first coach that jumped out at us?

I am convinced that Barta has made contact with his targets and that we will all know who the coach is at this time next week. There are games this weekend, remember?

We're not even sure that Barbee interviewed with iowa, but if he did, he is the ONLY one that took a different job. Is the concern based on the fact that we haven't hired Steve Lavin?

Our next coach is still coaching... from Pearl down to Forbes. From Gregory to Drew.

Barta is not going to lay an egg for botch this hire... if anything the pressure he is feeling is going to make him act in a very considerate and deliberate manner.

Good post!

This has gotten ridiculous. There is actually a post on another site stating that President Obama will announce his brother-in-law as Iowa's next basketball coach during the health care rally in Iowa City this afternoon. The poster stakes his reputation on it.

Believe it or not, there have been serious replies to the post!

Boss, your posts are usually very good, but your not from Asbury Park.

I've posted similar sentiments in a couple of other threads.

Honestly, we don't know any more today about who the Iowa coach is going to be than we did when Barta announced Lickliter had been fired. Well, we do know that Tony Barbee is going to Auburn and Ben Jacobson is likely staying in Cedar Falls. After that, who knows? I'm not sure anyone knows for sure -- beyond Pearl and Barta themselves -- whether Pearl has definitely said no. I strongly doubt he'll leave UT but I don't know that, nor does anyone else. There's just an abundance of speculation both ways.

If you're looking for an official list of candidates, forget it. The only list to be released will have just one name on it, and that is the new Iowa basketball coach when Barta introduces him.

Pearl would come if the money is right. It's up to Barta (and whoever else needs to sign off on the deal) if he wants to put that kind of money up (which also includes the extra money he might need for the football coaches if he forks over the money for Pearl). If Iowa can afford it, and I haven't read anything that says they can't, big salaries will make Iowa an attractive place to be for most coaches.

I would love to see Pearl. His hiring would rock the world of NCAA basketball and put Iowa City back on the map. Next season would be an instant sellout. Fun, competitive ball would return to CHA.

But I am honestly not expecting that.

The one thing that Ferentz's salary has accomplished is that Iowa football will always be a top flight job because of it.

Facilities are again being upgraded and there will be another raise in the future for the Captain.

Having a basketball salary of 3MM and a football at 4MM guarantees that you will always have competitive programs and big time coaches... having those programs being legit i;s good for the entire U - no doubt.

Those are investments that are worth it. I think that if Pearl would seriously come for 3MM a year, it gets done.
