Lay ups / FTs

Regardless of how well CU is shooting, have you ever sceen so many missed bunnies and FTs?

It was a pitiful show of basic basketball skills all the way around today. The team never did get on track. The one name that I have not heard much about when coach talks about improvements and impressing him in general is Basabe...I am now thinking there is a good reason for this fact...If I were the coach, I think I would be have Mr. Basabe taken out of the starting line up until his game picked up. That said, Mel was obviously not the reason we lost, this loss was a team loss.

I've watched all for games in my opinion, Mel doesn't know what to do with himself. With being bigger (and maybe not as quick), it has hurt is penetration which I thought was a strength. He'll get better, playing with a new body/style will take sometime.

Creighton gave us a lot of things to get better at, and I think we will.

There was a lot of choking today. While expected for the freshmen, they'll have to pick it up. They will, JO, came on big in the second half, albeit in semi mop up time. Gatens, probably won't miss another one like that this year.

Somebody has to step up be a leader and stop the bleeding that occurred today. I think Gatens initially did, but after that, no one was there to step up and make buckets.

That being said, I think the Hawks are getting better ball movement, spacing and open shots, and I think they'll shoot the ball better as the year goes along.

Mel is struggling because defenses are throwing a second defender at him the second he touches the ball. Defenses will continue doing this until he proves he can pass the basketball.

One positive stat for the Hawks today: They had only 8 turnovers. Not bad for a young team playing against a strong defensive club.

Definitely a positive. Haven't looked at the stats, but 8 to's is nice.

I'm not going to sugar coat it, it was a disgusting game to watch, but I still like what I see out of Ogelsby, White, McCabe.

Now they have to do something about the interior D. Hopefully the return of Brommer will shore that up at least a little.

Maybe I have blinders on, but I still see some improvements this year.

Seriously, eight TOs...WOW...there is something to build upon at least...now they need to work on laying the ball up and defending the post and ....

This team will improve, what I took away from this game was Iowa isn't this bad and while they are good and will win the Valley Creighton isn't 23 points better then Iowa.

Also Ogelsby and McCabe will be fine, but White plays way out of control and needs to slow things down. Once he does that he will be just fine.

i agree Ceighton is not as good as they played and Iowa is not as bad as they played;
i am not saying they would win the next game, but it would be a lot closer, at this point start McCabe and let Basabe come off the bench until he gets out of his dol drums, McCabe is playing with more energy and provides a outside scoring threat, both are the same height with McCabe being a tad heavier

I have never at any level seen so many missed uncontested layups. I don't even to know what to think or say about that. A 12 year old girl should make that shot and we repeatedly missed them.

I guess once we got behind they were so rattled that they were trying to hard and rendered themselves totally worthless.

The only reason Creighton shot so well was because they were open on every look. Can't figure out why you'd stay in zone when they're shooting it well from the perimeter.

It was god awful to watch at sometimes free throws just killed me how can you miss that many free ones!? everyone looked nervous out there i think this game was talked up a lot and our guys could not handle that pressure yet!

Sometimes in basketball an entire team goes cold. Or gets hot. It's a game of streaks. Today Iowa was on a 40 minute cold streak. Plus CU played a complete game.

Basabe is a major key to Iowa's play. With the lack of surrounding talent and big men in the lineup, as Duff mentioned, teams are now double teaming Basabe. It is going to take awhile for Basabe to figure out what to do or until he can get some help inside. Until then, the others are going to have to pick it up.

I am not going to get down on Basabe. He needs to get used to the new styles of defense being thrown at him. Take Iowa's ONLY real big out of the game and Iowa wills struggle. And at 6'7' or 6'8" that isn't a real big by any means.

Once we get the big recruits here, Iowa is going to have a lot of size and teams will no longer be able to double team Basabe. Teams will have their hands full with a 7'1" skilled player and even perhaps a 6'10" player at his side. That leaves Basabe one on one with opposing players inside.

In about 2 years or even toward the end of next year, Iowa is going to be very very tough inside. Just having a 7'1" player in the middle changes everything for Iowa. And the possibility of a 6'10" player playing next to him changes everything even more. Oglesby will have a season under his belt; Olesani will have a year under his belt and may provide some nice backup minutes. Basabe won't be double teamed everytime he touches the ball, and the rest of the team will have one more season under their belt. Iowa will not be depending on 6'7" inch guys to be their key rebounders, these guys will be able to help rebound AND run the floor with a couple of bigs in the middle.

So I am hoping that Iowa can have a nice season this year but they are going to have their hands full. Iowa is still a year or two away from being REALLY competitive in the B1G.

Write Creighton off and move on and continue to improve.

NewMex, when Basabe watches the film of the Creighton game, it will be easy for him to pick out when the double teams come, and it should make it clear to him what he needs to do. I agree that he will see a lot of doubles this season. He needs to learn to pass out of them.
