EDIT

last time we dominated like today? 64-0 Northwestern in 81. Same season we lost to Illini 7-24
Think about it! 81 - 18 outcomes reversed.
Spooky

Was thinking the same thing. Boy, that was another underachieving team. Michigan game just makes you sick how we had number 1 beat.

OMG
66-0 UNI
62-0 Hoosiers
31-0 Rodents
How do you have a defense that good along with Tavian and Tim and go 7-5 with a loss against AZ in minor bowl game?
3 wins by a final score of 159-0 (smh)

Beat Iowa State 63-20 that year as well.
Let the Michigan game slip away. Held to seven points in a tough loss at Wisconsin.
Whipped Illinois that year too. 38-14 or something like that.

4-0 in Kinnick, 0-4 on the road.

But, when Matt Sherman is your qb, you have limitations...

AJE's dad was a senior on that team.

We'd have won 10 games if Sherman didn't get hurt. That said, Reiners filled in just fine, leading the conference in passer efficiency. It was Reiners getting dinged up too that really hurt. Mullen started at Wisconsin and dug us a hole before Reiners came in anyway. And missing four FGs in the snow in Evanston. We don't lose either of those with Sherman playing or Reiners healthy IMO. And of course losing our best defensive player, Vernon Rollins, against ISU in what ended up being a career ending injury got the season off to a bad start anyway, although the defense was still pretty great overall.

I was at that Wisconsin game. I remember Reiners getting a little upset with offensive guard Chad Deal.

He yanked him by the facemask and more or less dragged him back to the huddle after, I believe, a little extracurricular activity after the whistle. Basically said get your head the f****** game or go sit in the f****** bus!

In 1984 we almost blanked three conference opponents, in a row no less.

10/6/84 Beat Northwestern 31-3
10/13/84 Beat Purdue 40-3
10/19/84 Beat Michigan 26-0

Obviously kept all three out of the end zone.

Ironically, we underachieved that year as well. We had the inside track to the Rose Bowl , when it meant much more, before our November turned sour. We came back for the Freedom Bowl with all hands on deck except for Ronnie Harmon (broken leg against Wisconsin) and famously destroyed Texas.

It seemed like that 1991 team had a pretty good defense. I just looked and although they didn't pitch a shutout all year, they held 7 of their opponents to 10 points or less.

10-1-1. Although the Holiday Bowl tie was disappointing, still one of my favorite Hawkeye teams. Last Iowa team to win at OSU iirc.

All the wins that year were blowouts.
5 losses by a total of 34 points (16 of those vs O$U)
This year
4 losses by a total of 23 points - OUCH!
