ok, I missed the game Saturday and could only catch a glimpse of the game winning play. Was that a 2 TE set with running backs in the I formation? If so, have we EVER used this formation. I know it confused the ISU defense and made them call a time out first and out of the time we went right back to the sam formation. Frikkin brilliant play call!

It was a 22 formation....2 TEs, a RB and an FB. Kulick, the FB, picked up the blitz beautifully which left ISM in one on one coverage which he was able to beat. We run 22 all the time...the difference is that we historically run out of that formation about 85% of the time. This year, we are passing out of that set MUCH more...

I'd argue the playcalling most of the day was damn good, aside from a lull in the 3rd quarter. BF really tried to be unpredictable by running out of what is normally a passing personnel for us in 11. Also noticed we threw a lot out of 12 personnel, and not just quick or underneath routes, but fades and TEs deep as well. So far I'm very impressed with Brian as a playcaller.

Crazy thing about it is they only sent 2 guys on routes. It was clearly designed for 1-on-1 on the outside to ISM and then Fant on a drag in the back of the endzone if it wasn't there. Seems to me the whole thing was based around ISM's speed as they didn't have MVB there instead.

The way ISM started his route in motion and then came back to the ball after the break is very impressive. his defender had no chance on that ball since it was thrown low and ISM came back to get it.

Yes...a Kirk Ferentz team called a play in overtime designed around a true freshman WR, who fumbled last week, beating his man one and one, and if it wasn't there the second option was a true sophomore cutting across the field. The sentence alone blows my mind.

why was the ISU defense confused by this play call

I loved the play calling in this game. Can you imagine if Iowa went into this game running that horrible horizontal passing game?
