Lack of development

First, I'm not claiming to be an expert but I am perceiving a lack of development with most of our players. Olesani has improved immensely. But after that I don't see much. Gesell seems to pretty much be the Gesell we saw as a Frosh. Clemmons, Woody, Ogelsby? Whitey is still Whitey. Not much of an outside shot and hasn't developed the ability to take anyone off the dribble. Uthoff and Jok have seen marginal improvement IMO. That is what is most concerning to me right now.

White went from being a MAC level player, to All-B1G. Part of that is an eye for talent and part is development.

Woody is probably the 2nd most improved player after Olaseni.

Clemmons couldn't dribble with his left hand or throw a rock in the ocean when he graduated HS. He has improved, just not enough.

Gesell hasn't been what we hoped. Obviously Oglesby hasn't either.

Don't forget about Marble either. Fran turned him into a NBA player.

Don't forget about Gatens, he became very good at coming off screens. Kind of what Fran was hoping Oglesby to be but that hasn't worked out like one would hope. Throw in Jarryd Cole as well. He didn't have any semblance of a mid range game until Fran came on board.

Heck now that I think of it, a lot of the bigs have developed a mid range game under Fran. Cole, Olaseni, Woodbury, and even Basabe. People forget he rarely shot the mid range jumper his first few years.

Let's not forget about May. He became a pretty decent player by the time he graduated.

Marble always has NBA skills, too bad Fran didn't teach him some leadership qualities.

Woody has improved some but he was terrible when he came on board. Very clumsy and slow off his feet. 7 feet tall but plays about 6'6". Oglesby has been one of the biggest busts in Hawkeye BB History. His playing time should be over at Iowa. He has been given ample opportunity to show he can shoot the 3 but has failed miserably.

Spot on!

Ogelsby and Gesell are huge misses. If they would have been the players they appeared to be (top 150 players) this thread wouldn't exist.

Gessell is not a miss. That is the dumbest statement going around these boards now. Gessell is a good Big 10 player. Is he an All Big-10 player? No. But he is a competent player. He is a solid, mid-level Big 10 starter. He is far and away our best guard.

He's just short, which prevents him from finishing at the rim. And he's shown he's not a great 3-point shooter, which is really the skill he needs to develop to become an above-average Big 10 starter.

People act like other teams don't recruit good players too. Gessell was a borderline Top 100 recruit. I believe Rivals ranked him 99. That means Rivals thought there were at least 98 other players better than him, of which probably a dozen are playing for other Big 10 teams. Borderline Top 100 recruits often become average Big 10 starters, and that is exactly what he is.

Dude, get some work done. You're going to get fired for trolling Iowa message boards day and night. You must still be feeding off the adrenaline of your big win!!

Drew, i pretty much agree with all of your posts. Agree with this too. I don't think Gesell is a bust, and agree he is easily our best guard. My comment should have been worded differently. I expected him to be a better shooter (FT's too) than he is, and to be All-B1G. Still time for him to start hitting a few more 3's.

From where Gesell was ranked to his play currently. I would lable him as a miss. Perhaps I went overboard a bit with adding him as a huge miss...

If he were consistently playing like a top 100 guy this thread wouldn't exist. This teams biggest issue is guard play and lack of outside shooting. If he were playing at a high level this team would be sitting with a better record and a lot more hope from us as to how the season will progress.

The guards have to hit their shots to open the lanes for our bigs. Gesell has not shot well outside of UNC, which we won.

Its not height that is MG problem with finishing.

Granted, if he was 6'6 he would be much more effective but knowing how to get shots off is a skill and he struggles there.

Hes a decent enough athlete he just doesn't have any kind of shake or deception. It's all just straight ahead to the rim.

His biggest problem by far though is the 3 ball. If that starts to fall it makes everything else much easier.
