Kirk Ferentz Not in Favor of Proposed Preseason Practice Model

I agree with Kirk. 8 full contact practices out of 25 seems like a joke to me. I get the point, in theory, but whole heartedly agree that you have to learn how to take a hit as well as deliver one. It's one of those models that I struggle with.

Anyone surprised he doesn't like change? JK

I like that Iowa/KF went back and looked at the stats are are basing their opinion on facts and science, not anecdotes.

Mixed feelings.

1. Don't believe for a second there were no concussions in spring practices. Several years ago when concussions by team were listed Iowa was always low. Likely that was lack of identification. A team that prior didn't feel it had a voice on other issues is likely not going to have a secure voice to report concussions. Concussions, even worse ones's aren't always identifiable immediately. Own son had a season-ending concussion from a hit just prior to a pick-six an interception in the end zone. Coaches checked him out. I saw it and noticed he didn't know which side (right or left) to line up on. The coaches were screaming at him and thought he was just being an idiot. I intervened.

2. Not really respecting someone who didn't see the huge problems on his team.

3. Former colleague of mine played D1 and a 4 year starter. Scored a TD at IU. He maintains injuries are less in college than HS due to being coached the right way. KF may have a point.... to a point.
