King should absolutely shadow Lazard

I know Kirk doesn't seem to do this often or ever really, but I will be so frustrated if Lazard has a huge day against iowa and they don't make any adjustments. Mabin will get picked on and it would be so foolish to not have your best player and one of the best corners in the country covering the opponents best player. I know there is already a thread about benching mabin but that seems unnecessary.
 
It's really going to be interesting to see how Iowa handles him. They played mostly man vs Miami. Can they get away with that vs Lazard?
 
Lazard is either going to be ignored Saturday with King covering him or Lanning is still going to target Lazard 15-20 times in which case I predict 2 King INT's.
While this seems like an obvious coaching decision, I love the change in the philosophy.
 
I see King getting 2 picks in this game. The ISU qb is still going to throw to Lazard no matter whos covering.
 
I'm so excited about this news. Mabin on Lazard was my biggest worry coming out of the Miami game.
 
The only thing about this is I wish they wouldn't have announced it and just showed up Saturday and did it... I'm totally down with having him do it for the obvious reasons. For one King just plain should be on him all game. For two if they wouldn't have announced it that they were going to it would have been unexpected and they may not have prepared for it at all... That said I do like the swagger that Iowa has in saying look here's our best that's going to lock up yours. Let's go play.
 
This surprises me a little, only in the fact that it is not easy to go from one side to another at cornerback. I actually think this shows that the coaches have confidence in Mabin to be able to handle the cha Ge in sides. There is a lot of technique in playing CB that makes switching sides difficult.
 
I am sure that putting King on Lazard is an acceptable scheme. I would not be surprised, however, if other schemes interact with Mabin, like safety support, more blitzes on clear passing downs, bumping Lazard off his routes with LB's , etc. Will be interesting. I think Iowa played everything very straight up and basic against Miami and Mabin's tough day was probably unexpected. But, letting him play through it and showing him a lot of film may pay dividends. Remember, this guy played pretty well last year overall. He is not King. But, apparently neither was any other corner in the country last year.

I agree. I don't see the point in announcing it. I actually don't like the move at all. We'll see how it plays out. It will be a fun match-up to watch that's for sure. I guess I just don't think it's necessary, and in some respects I think it's a little risky. Communication and assignments are huge in the defensive backfield and this changes everything up. Not only are they physically going to be switching sides from time to time, but they'll need to be aware of how their assignments and communication will change based upon where they are at.

Now, both King and Mabin have a ton of experience so I'm sure they are capable of moving around and knowing what they are supposed to do no matter where they are at on the field. Football is a game of instant reactions though. A tenth of a second can make a huge difference. If this slows them down at all it could be a problem. Maybe I'm just over-analyzing it though. I tend to do that from time to time according to my wife :)

Like I said, it will be fun to watch. Two great players going at it. I'm sure the NFL guys will love watching this film.
 
Here is another way of thinking about it: in a match-up of great CB and great receiver, the receiver always has the advantage and will win a fair amount of the time because he knows where he is going, while the CB has to react. Now if King's greatness is greater than Lazard's greatness, matching him up one-on-one could still work. But many teams will employ a different strategy (New England did this a lot at the pro-level with Revis): they will match their stud CB on the #2 receiver, and then they will give the #1 receiver constant double-teams. No matter how good King is, he is probably not as good as 2 defenders.

I would guess they will mix-and-match a bit. Probably some base (each corner playing their side), some King on Lazard, and some doubling. Should be a fun chess match.
 
Blitz-o-rama.....Iowa needs to bring everything....King will at least have 1 pick....Lazard might get the "Outlaw" treatment if he steps inside.......
 
I know multiple people pointed this out on this thread about King saying today they will play more matchups rather than sides of the field. While this is great news, notice he did not say "I will be following Lazard around" like many of us have just assumed (and hoped) thats what he meant. I think it actually means that they will mix it up and make adjustments if necessary. Which is still great news. It means they are respecting Lazard's abilities understanding the offenses tendencies and not going to ignore it and stick to their base defense like it often feels like they do

I'm with you, I love we're doing it but why make it public? Gives them more time to try different ways to get him the ball

Pretty sure that it really isn't such a surprise for ISU that teams are thinking of ways to defend their only offensive weapon.
 
I'm calling BS on the Morehouse tweet. What, did KF open up the game plan for Morehouse...sure, right. Even New Kirk isn't giving anyone dick in this situation. Morehouse is trolling ISU.

I saw tweets from Iowa Hawkeyes I think that looked like they were legit.
