KF Responds to Ed Cunningham Comments

Ferentz is full of shit here. He played the CYA, scapegoat card when he used "medically cleared" as a bullshit excuse. Ed McCaffery was "medically cleared" before he broke his leg on tv but he didn't keep playing after it happened. And don't whine about those not being the same circumstances. Beathard was visibly hurt, walking around like he was just in a car accident.

I'm not a strict Ferentz hater but he's dead wrong.

In the Hawk Central article topdawg99 linked to before this thread was posted, there was a little more to Casey Beathard's quote.
Beathard's father, Casey Beathard, responded to Hawkeye columnist Chad Leistikow about Cunningham's comments:

"That's tough," Casey Beathard wrote. "CJ is great (at) convincing coaches he can go. I don't (and) he will never fault those coaches or any other coach for possible dangerous situations. I bet it has never crossed his mind.

"He's THAT kind of competitor. I guess the coaches trusted him too much. It's all good."

“The coaching and medical staff at Iowa were always very thorough and diligent in addressing any injury situations, and shared all medical information with C.J. and us, as parents. We had absolute confidence in Coach Ferentz, his coaching staff and the medical team to make player safety an uncompromising priority on game day, on the practice field and in the weight room.”

Disagree here. A pulled hammy doesn't necessarily mean, as a QB, he can't compete. Hell, I remember the Marshall game where Leftwich's olinemen were carrying him after every completion because he literally couldn't walk to get to the next huddle. Or games where QBs competed with a bum, even separated, non-throwing shoulder. He wasn't concussed and he was a senior that had earned the capital necessary to go out like he wanted to.

I didn't hear you or anyone else complaining during the undefeated run in 2015 when CJ was competing with a sports hernia.

It's football, injuries happen. As long as we're not talking about a head injury, let him stay in and compete....

So now anyone who tweaks a hammy has to sit. There is a difference between playing someone hurt when they haven't been cleared and making a change because maybe the backup gives a better chance of hanging in a game. No one complained when Drew Ott was playing one armed football!

Beathard practiced and played in one of the senior bowls on January 27 so if it was a bad hammy pull he wouldn't have been doing that.

It was terrible to leave him in a useless game that was a blow out loss when you knew you had a QB competition coming up the next season.

Thats great he was cleared. But unless CJ could throw a 27 point pass, he doenst need to be in there.

Correct, and they stop prize fights when one boxer cannot defend themselves. CJB could not move any which way in the 4th qtr of the bowl game so he was defenseless and not making plays. He should have been pulled and they should have let Stanley throw the ball all over the place to get him some reps.

I like KF overall but just another of many times where he leaves in a starter too long, way too long.

1. Blowout game that there was no chance of winning.

2. Not being mobile leads to getting hurt. If he would have taken a shot to the head, or had his head slammed on the turf because he couldn't move you'd be singing a different tune.

3. Stanley had burned his shirt already and could have used any snaps he could get.

I think KF should have pulled C.J. But this is football. Someone mentioned the B. Leftwich game. Phillip Rivers played a playoff game with a torn ACL. Jack Youngblood played in the Super Bowl with a broken leg.

KF didn't make the decision maliciously without regard to C.J. He just wanted his QB to go out on his own terms.

CJ was like John Paul Jones the year before taking on the Serapis. He took hits that were his decision when he could have bailed. In the Outback, he was like the Indianapolis in WW2 being in the sites of a submarine and taking no evasive action. It was brutal.

Took away what respect I had for KF. He should have just been quiet. Grown man college student or not, the head of the team should have made the decision to take him out.

It was egregious and could have resulted in a head injury. Also a player who gets hit like that might not have been thinking clearly and not able to say it was time to quit.

People act as if head injuries are the only ones that matter long term... Playing on bum ankles, knees, elbows, shoulders, backs, hammys etc etc etc aren't good for guys either. Look at some of the guys that can't tie their own shoes anymore and are barely 50. CJ in the 3rd q couldn't walk without a limp let alone run. Watching him try and chase down that FL defender after throwing that INT was the terrible. I get the whole gun slinger mentality of going out how he wanted but if that's the case why'd they take him out with like 2 or 3 mins to go at all like they did? I mean if your going to leave him in there with 10 mins to go down 3 or 4 scores ( pretty much no chance at winning) then he should have taken the last snap too. Giving Stanley those 2 or 3 reps to just hand the ball off was dumb. They could have gotten him meaningful reps if they'd have put him in with 10 plus mins to go in the game. To me it's almost insulting for both the QB getting taken out at the end and to the one entering at the very end like that. Neither got a dang thing out of it..

1. So his injury only matters in-so-much as what's happening in the game? That sorta sounds disingenuous.
2. Does CJ's opinion not count in any of this? It's his career we're talking about, not yours. He earned the right, after his historic leadership in 2015, to go out on his terms, not yours.
3. Maybe so, maybe not. Maybe Stanley deferred to CJ and said let him play. There's a million things that could have happened that we're not privy to. Pretty sure KF has earned the right after 19 years to make that call....

Once again, just my opinion....

Jane, don't you and Tracy have something better to do than post on Hawkeye Nation?

I do think he was hiding behind the docs too... CJ would have had to been looked at by the docs to even get cleared one way or the other and do we even know if he was checked out at any point during the game? If your watching the game with the best seat in the house like KF is how can you not see your QB can't run. Is obviously not just laboring out there but hurt and holding the ball too long (because Oline stunk and receivers couldn't get open) and just getting himself clobbered over and over because he stubbornly wouldn't throw the ball away earlier is just crazy. You don't need to see 3 quarters of that before taking him out do you? I remember watching it and hearing Ed talking about it and found myself siding with him... Just because a guy can stand up and take a snap doesn't mean they should necessarily be out there playing D1 football. If that's medically cleared to play then what isn't??
