Kerry's First Game in Wrigley

Seeing Kerry Wood's last game today was a moment for pause. Back on April 18th, 1998, BoHawk & I hopped on a plane in KC en route to Chicago to watch the Cubs take on the Dodgers. It was a mid-morning flight, and the plane landed in KC from Texas with service to Chicago Midway...a few folks were flying straight through and were on the plane when Bill and I boarded..they were just starting to get into the cups, and back then, Bill and I joined them..small talk and they asked us where we were going. "We're going to Wrigley to watch the Cubs. Wood is making his Wrigley debut." They said 'We know, we're his family." We should have known, given the mullets and all.

Needless to say it was an entertaining ride up. As we were descending into Chicago, they asked us if we wanted tickets with them near the Cubs dugout. We thanked them and said 'No thanks, we have bleacher tickets.' To which they replied, 'Yeah, we tried getting those but they don't let players get those for free." The plane landed and we parted ways...rode the L Trains to Wrigley and had a great day. The Cubs won 8-1.

Oh and a PS: The night prior, April 17th, was my first date with the woman who would become my wife...I spent the night at Bill's that night as we had to get up early and go to Chicago. When I got back from the date, Bill asked how it went. "I think it went pretty good. I will probably ask her out again."

I was at Wrigley today and witnessed his last outing. Class act through and through. We were walking by the players parking lot after the game and he was out signing everything. He signed my game ticket and the wife had her picture taken with him.

Selling it on ebay???

Roommate in college was a big Cubs fan. After class one day, I can remember watching Wood fan those 20 Astros in a 1-hitter. He made that good Astros team look like minor leaguers. Just crazy good stuff. The kind of stuff that only Nolan Ryan had sometimes. Fun to watch.

I feel old, too!

Diesel.....getting into the cups? Thats a new one.

I actually did think it WAS A COOL STORY BRAH.

I thought it was cool how his son greated him as he left the field.

That was a touching moment yesterday watching Wood pitch for the last time. Now he can join the organization in the another capacity to help the Cubs win a WS.

Leave it to Cubs fans who celebrate a guy who pitched for 12-13 seasons and couldn't even win 90 games. Celebrating him yesterday like he's a HOF'er was laughable and embarrassing.....but very Cub-ish. Congrats to Wood on a career that never lived up to the hype that went along with it.

Haven't noticed....were all your other posts as stupid and inane as this one or did you just hit your peak?

Kerry is a class act. It's too bad he was hurt so much. With Kerry and Mark Prior seemingly always on the DL, one has to wonder in their pitching coach was any good. On a side note, the Cubs purchased the contract for Koyie Hill from the Reds. He is hitting 195! The Cub fans have seen this act before. Double face palm in order????
