Ken Pomeroy Rankings: Amazing Progress

The Ken Pomeroy rankings, or KenPom rankings, are about as accurate as anyone in college basketball. The progress Fran has made with the Iowa program has been remarkable when viewed through this prism. Here are the final KenPom rankings at the end of the past 6 years:

2010 (Lick's final disastrous year): #178

2011 (Fran's first year): 92
2012: 89
2013: 25
2014: 28
2015: 20 (will finish very close to this number, since very few teams are still playing)

What this shows is that Fran, for the past 3 years, has established Iowa as a TOP 25 program. Can they maintain this or improve on it? Or will he fall back, like Mr. Ferentz? Time will tell.

I think he has done a spectacular job at Iowa thus far, resurrecting a team that was in absolute flames under Lick.

Strange as this may seem to say, calling us "...a team that was in absolute flames under Lick," is actually an understatement. I got a good laugh out of that one interview he did recently (in the last six months) where he evidently told the reporter, with a straight face, that he was sooooo close to getting it turned around at Iowa when he was canned.Whatever.

If by "turned around" Lick meant a 180 degree turn away from being a successful program, he's right. As the OP shows, KenPom had Lick's last Iowa team ranked at 178. That is just 2 away from a complete 180 away from a successful program. I'm assuming Lick was commenting on his goal to completely ruin Iowa hoops for generations to come.

Back then the best part of the schedule was the non conference because we actually had a chance to win some. Now those games are boring because we win by 30.

And when we beat a ranked MSU team it wasn't much fun. We scored something like 40 points. Losses under Fran are more fun to watch than wins under Lick.

I don't know....all he needed was 2 or 3 top 5 recruiting classes and he would have had it turned around. I'm sure those were right around the corner.

We could be like Kentucky and just bring in 1 and done guys. Except instead of leaving for the NBA after 1 year, they just leave because they can't stand playing for Lick.

I think he'll continue to improve, or at least maintain, because now the margin for improvement is thinner. McCaffery talks about competing for national championships, not bowl championships. I think he'll keep that proverbial fire in his belly to keep improving.
