keeping things in perspective

last year Iowa beat MSU by 20 at home and lost by 19 at MSU
that is a 39 pt turn around
also we are 10-8 overall after 18 games we were 7-11 last year
Iowa didn't get their 2nd win in the BT until the 22nd game
this team has improved alot from last season to this, not to mention the BT scheduler for the 2nd season did Iowa no favor with schedule, we won't face a team in the lower half of the BTtil Jan 26th, having to play Purdue twice in the 1st 7 games

This is a brutal stretch no doubt. 3 games in 7 days. 2 of them on the road and 2 of them to top ten teams.

Good points; I think its just a bad day for Hawkeye sports; First a lot of people still have a bad taste in their mouth over the bowl game, everyone is ****** off at the Coker situation, and now we are losing by like 40 points in BB.

it also seemed like MSU could not miss or do anything wrong and again iowa couldnt get the bunnies to fall

The talent gap between Iowa and "better" teams is as wide as the Grand Canyon. We have far too many dudes on the roster that should be playing at North Dakota State, not in the big ten. A 20 point loss is a drubbing, but to get absolutely run off the floor against OSU and MSU like we did is painful. Their two deeps would be beat us and I am not exaggerating.

Grin and bear it this year and wait for the incoming infusion of talent next year.

Yes, but it stil might take a couple of years. IU has had nice recruiting classes for a few years and are just now reaping the benefits. Took UM a couple of years as well. Be patient.

Last night was painful no doubt. With the style tha Fran plays, this is what can happen when the other team has that much more talent than we do. This really is no worse than a 20-25 pt loss under Lick and his style though. If Licks team played at Fran's pace, Iowa's close games would have been 40 pt losses......

Nobody, not certifiably insane, picked the Hawks to win one of their first seven games. The wins at Wisconsin and Minnesota were huge for the program and the fans, not to mention Fran and the team. They were hard-fought, tough games, and the team deserves all the credit due.

It s unfortunate we had to play OSU and MSU immediately after. Extreme case of poor timing. They are both Final Four caliber teams.

The bitter loss last night at MSU was not due to anything the Hawks did or did not do. No amount of preparation would have made a difference. The Spartans played perhaps their best game ever, not unusual against the Hawks. Too many times has that happened. There might not be a college team in America that would have defeated MSU last night. The sooner this game is forgotten, the better, however Fran should remind the team about certain aspects of the game.

I personally have no problem with Fran's coaching style.

:)

i like your post:)

Agree with the OP that this year's team is an improvement over last year - should easily break the 11-win mark that last year's team put up. But we're not "there" yet. Next year's recruiting class should make a big impact, at least once they've got a year or so in the Big Ten under their belts.

something else to ponder, 1st 4 year of Duke being under coach K.
1980-81 17-13 6-8 T5TH
1981-82 10-17 4-10 T6TH
1982-83 11-17 3-11 7TH
1983-84 24-10 7-7 T3RD
not earth shattering seasons, but even coach K struggled at 1st
people have to have patience and by looking at next years class, year 4 looks similar to that level of success, will it translate into what Duke has gone to do, who knows only time will tell

How come after every loss someone makes a post saying "Keep this in perspective" or "Don't give up on them" like anyone is doing that?

because after a loss there are fans ready to throw the coach and players under the bus
and some like to try and keep it under control by doing just this by giving reasons to keep it positive

People used this Duke myth when trying to think of reason's why Lickliter should have been kept around and give 7 years.

I think 97% of the people around here see that Iowa's recruiting is getting better, and can see some positive things with the basketball program.

We understand there needs to be some patience but showing what Duke did does not really mean anything. Coach K was WAY younger when he started and is still at Duke. Fran is 53 and I would hope he coaches maybe 12 - 13 years at Iowa and has built enough stability to pass the program on to the next coach.

coach K actually went out and got talent, Lick didn't. so the comparison is more valid
then you have Crean and Indiana who has more talent in state in one year than Iowa does in 5, it still took him 4 years

I am sure there are lot of the 345 Division 1 programs who can point to Duke but it might just be one of those rare things that happend at Duke.

Yeah I know what you are saying about Crean. I said after IU beat Kentucky that if it took IU 4 years it might take Iowa a tad longer to be consistenly better. Crean has faced some really bad luck over the years due to injury, which might have cost him a year.

I am fine with being patient at this point.
