Just Finished Watching the Game.....

and I am sick and tired of no calls at the end of games that decide the games. The big 10 refs call the dumbest ticky tack fouls 40 feet from the basket and then they let a mugging like what took place on Fuller at the end of regulation. No calls like that all to often decide the outcome of the game. There was another no call against Gatens near the end of OT on a drive. That was too bad, Iowa deserved to win that game. Not blaming the loss on the refs, but man I would not be disappointed to see Hightower and Valentine start drawing from their retirements soon.

If your not blaming them, then what are you doing? The refs didn't lose the game, Iowa did. You don't decide a game on a possible bump foul with two large men. You can't go into the play expecting to get a foul there.

Big 10 refs are notorious for not calling fouls at the end of regulation when the game is on the line even when there is obvious contact. I know it is going to happen because I have seen it time and time again. And trust me, I know Big 10 refs, my sister is married to one. I am just not a fan of the no call. A foul is a foul, it shouldn't matter when it happens in the game, so blow the whistle. I guarantee that drive by Fuller is called a foul in the first half. What makes it not a foul because it happens at the end of the game?

Sorry but I gotta,"refs don't determine the outcomes of events","you just have to play through it". I heard them sooooo many times it makes me want to puke.IMO this day and age Refs have become part of the game and thats unfortunate because the human ego is a bad thing.
IMO they are there to keep the players within the boundaries of the game and they are a set thing. Refs today are more like Supreme Court Justices making interpretations of the rules. Just imagine if they actually called the hand check fouls.

This is why my dad couldn't stand watching basketball: "the refs are intrusive, they control the game's outcome more than in any other sport"

I love the game but he was right about that.

In my understanding, there is no foul for hand-checking. The actual act of putting your hand on the ball handler is not a foul. However, it is when the defender impedes the progress of the offensive player while NOT in a legal guarding position, that there is a foul.

I'm not defending poor officiating... Truthfully, I only think officiating is poor if it is inconsistent. And not calling fouls at the end of the game that would be called throughout the game is inconsistent.

So if you know this, obviously TL must know this, explain why he decided to have them take it the rack at the end of OT down by 3? That's what you should be ****** about.

I don't know that is is called a foul, he fouled Sims alot last night with nothing called to so i guess it does go both ways.

thats what I thought.....we fouled Sims on his 3 to tie it and no call was made....we could have been down by one at the end instead of tied so not sure we have anything to complain about

The game shouldn't have gone to overtime.

Watch the moving screen and hold Laval Lucas-Perry puts on Fuller to free Sims for the game-tying shot in regulation. Saw it in real time during the broadcast last night and, of course, in every highlight replay on the BTN and ESPN. Watch No. 31 at the 1:38 mark in this clip on the BTN site; such great blocking skills would make Rich-Rod proud:

Michigan outlasts Iowa, 80-78, in OT - Big Ten Network

Capable officials have the courage and integrity to make that call. That's apparently asking too much of Hightower, Valentine & Co.

Of course, if Iowa had fouled to force free throws at the end Michigan has less of a chance of tying. Not sure what Lickliter was thinking to not coach that.

Even with the hold and moving screen Fuller still almost blocked the shot.

I have rewatched the three point shot by Sims several times and it was actually defended very well by Fuller. He had his hand up defending very well. Not even sure Fuller made much if any contact at all. Sims fell to the ground, but it was not due to him being fouled.

The ticky tack foul at the end of the first half validates my point exactly. Yes, there was some contact, but not nearly as much as on the last drive of the game. The little foul at the end of the first gets called and the big foul at the end does not. Again, a foul is foul no matter when it happens druing the game. Grow a pair and blow the whistle. They are suppose to be professionals.

And regarding fouling at the the end when Iowa is up by three. The thought crossed my mind, but as Jim Jackson said, the decision to do that runs about 50-50 with coaches. I think to blame the game on Lick just because he did not choose to have his team foul doesn't make sense. I guess I had no problem with Gatens driving to the bucket so long as he made the two and we were able to get a foul quickly. I think he was actually fouled there as well....and what.....the dreaded no call.

Nevertheless, the Hawks played very well, Lick coached a good game and Iowa came out on the short end. I still think progress was made, even though I know losing sucks for the coaches and players and the fans as well.
