Just don't get the Forbes Fascination

Why do people want him so bad.

Not a head coach. Supposedly a good recruiter, but that is for Bruce Pearl and Tennessee, not HC at Iowa. Personally I think Tennessee under Bruce Pearl recruits for itself basically.

Forbes is getting way too much hype, this would would really be a lackluster hire in my opinion.

Hopefully Barta is smarter than that.

Forbes does NOT equal Pearl.

I'm with ya. I don't even think he's even Tennessee's 1st ***'t.

I don't think that any school just 'recruits for itself' i.e. Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, etc all need to recruit if they are competing for one player amongst themselves.

No kidding, and we won't get anyone close to Pearl's level. Forbes can recruit, would put butts in the seat and re-energize fans, and he would do anything to succeed at Iowa.

That's why he should be the next HC at Iowa.

I realize that they don't exactly recruit themselves, but it is much easier to convince a top player to play for a top school with a top coach than it is Iowa... A notable recruiter at that level doesn't necessarily translate at Iowa's level at all. Iowa is a really hard sell right now, unless we get a coach that is known and that kids want to play for. I don't think Forbes really brings that on his own.

Jon actually talked about Forbes bringing in some very good players at Louisiana Tech, and he also had a very successful stint as a HC at the JUCO level, producing several All-Americans. Jon thought his rep as a recruiter is legit because he was doing it long before he went to Tennessee.

He is a good recruiter, and it's really not debateable. He brought a top 10 class nationally to Louisiana Tech, top 35 class to Idaho, he was at Texas A&M with Gillespie during their rise. And now at Tennessee.

Here are a few players he has gotten to sign.
Paul Millsap
Deandre Jordan
Scotty Hopson
Bobby Maze
Emmanuel Negedu

He was good as a HC at JUCO, and produced 3 all-americans.

The only thing he hasn't done is head coach at the D-1 level.

While the print on the door doesn't say assistant head coach, he and the official asst hc are paid the same and do the same amount for the program. The only reason he is not the official asst hc is because Pearl's official #1 asst has been with him for a decade while Forbes has only been there since 2006. He just got to the party late.

There is a reason he is 50 and doesn't have a head coaching gig...

If Forbes is the guy. It will be a wait and see for me. Can he actually bring in the recruits that everyone claims he can. I'm assuming that recruiting to Tenn and recruiting at Iowa is like comparing oil and water.

Forbes success at Iowa will IMO in the end be judged on his x's and o's.

Marc Maggard can say what he wants about Forbes. I still find it very odd that if he is so highly viewed upon that he isn't coaching somewhere. Why he still sits as an asst. on Tenn is a confusing one to me.

Flat out getting players doesn't equate to wins. Period. Getting players is half the battle, the other half is coaching them.

Let's also be clear one thing. Steve Forbes has yet to prove he can recruit players to play for HIM. Recruiting them to play for Bruce Pearl, not a bad gig. Recruiting them to play for Billy Gillispie, that didn't hurt either.

How well known was billy gillespie before he coached the recruits Forbes was in on. BTW you can hire an X and O guy if that's not a strong suit, which I think might actually be for Forbes contrary to what you nay sayers think.

Yeah, no doubt. Ask George R. how getting the players won him most of the battles. And there won't be that level of talent in IC for a LONG time.

Also is Gary Barta willing to gamble right now on a Steve Forbes.

If anyone plays Texas Hold'em I would compare it to having a Jack-10 Suited and someone goes all-in with Ace-King. Is Gary Barta willing to gamble. Sure Jack-10 isn't a terrible hand, however are you willing to risk all your chips to call it. A good player folds and waits for a better hand. Will see what Gary Barta does, stay tuned..
