I want to thank this guy for being a team player. He came in here to be the starting QB for the Hawkeye's. After Rick left, he was paired up against JVB to be the starting QB. He did not win. Instead of asking for a transfer, (which a lot of football palyer do now a days), he supported JVB as the back up QB. At one point, A.J. Derby passed him as the #2 QB. He has stuck it out. He could have continued to be the #2 QB, but he made the switch to punter. It looks like he is going to be the starting punter for 2012. Every team needs these glue guys. I would like to thank John for sticking with the team and being a good team player. He does not get the publicity he deserves.

I have never understood what happened to this guy. He was highly touted out of high school originally committed to Michigan and changed to Iowa. Someone along the lines thought he was a pretty good quarterback at some point.

If he could play, he'd be playing.

Jake Christensen was an Elite 11 QB coming out of High School.

Just sayin.

And he's the holder for field goals and extra points. Time for even more trickery?

That to say, I completely agree with the OP on his level of being a true team member. Who cares what kind of football player he was rated coming out of high school. Sounds to me like he has learned more about the things that really matter in LIFE. You know...things that don't seem to exist much anymore like putting others in front of yourself.

I admit, I liked Wienke a lot coming out of high school, I thought he would take over the reins. Unfortunately I was wrong, but I am glad he stuck it out.

Could be a very dangerous punter. Can throw it a little bit - how about some fake punts for a change?

sadly, it will be used playing NIU or Cent. Mich. so other teams have to "prepare" for it, rather then using it when we need to in a big game. I think that was my biggest issue with Kirk's style. lets run a reverse pass against Minnesota when we are up by 35 in the 4th quarter.

I will be the a-hole in this thread, Wienke is doing what he is suppose to be doing being a good teammate..... I am not going to pat him on the back for this. Countless college football guys are doing the same thing. Ghost is right if he could play he would be playing.
