John Streif Retires from Iowa Athletics Hawkeye Sports

From article:

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- John Streif, a member of the University of Iowa athletic department since 1972, has announced his retirement. Streif served as assistant athletic trainer for 40 years and added the position of travel coordinator in 1980. He has also served as a member of Iowa's Athlete Assistance Program.

Truly, an end of an era! I remember meeting John in 1978 at the end of a bball game in the old Field House. Just a great guy... who I am sure that if you cut him, he would bleed black and old gold!

I have a twitter account and I follow alot of the guys in the media who cover the hawks and they are retweeting a bunch of former players from Mitch King to Marvin McNutt talking about him and how great he is and how much he meant to them. Those are the types of people that make you proud to be a hawkeye.

Well, well look at you Mr. Big Shot.

Last class of semester around 1982ish - Coaching Basketball w/ Jim Rosborough as instructor - brings in John Streif and John tells the story of Ronnie Lester and finishes with the day he helped move Ronnie move his mom out of the projects in Chicago - not a dry eye in the room and that included about 1/2 of the basketball team.... Streif was and is CLASS!! Enjoy your retirement!!

i have only heard great things about John. and he was great to everyone, not just the athletes. my boss (an Iowa grad) just thinks he is the greatest, most professional dude in the world.

I had a few encounters with JS when I was attending Iowa basketball camps. Stand..Up.... Man... and Hawkeye Legend. He was unrakned out of high school and just blossomed into one of the greatest Hawks of all time.
