JEWELL NAMED B1G CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell was named Big Ten Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s 21-19 loss to fourth-ranked Penn State on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. The weekly honor is the second of the season for Jewell, who was also recognized for his play in Iowa’s opening win over Wyoming.

Jewell (6-foot-2, 236-pounds), a native of Decorah, Iowa, matched his career high with 16 tackles against Penn State. His total included 11 solo stops and three tackles for loss. He also had his fifth career interception, with his 33-yard return leading to Iowa’s first touchdown of the game. Jewell recovered a fumble in the second half and finished the game with two pass break-ups.

Jewell leads the Big Ten with 44 tackles through four games. He has 345 career tackles to rank 12th on Iowa’s career chart.

The Big Ten honor is the second for Jewell in his career and third for Iowa this season. Quarterback Nate Stanleywas named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s overtime win at Iowa State.

The Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1) play at Michigan State (2-1, 0-0) Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:12 p.m. CT. The game is televised on FOX.

I am sure he would trade the recognition for a win though. Glad he is playing for the good guys!!!

Best defensive effort by one player I have ever seen.

That Indiana game where Bob Sanders had 20 tackles was pretty darn impressive. I believe that was his sophomore year. Basically they had him spy on Randle-El the whole game and the quarterback still had a heck of a game. So did the running back. But Sanders had 20 tackles, as I recall. I was at that game and it has always stuck in my mind as a great game for a defensive player, for obvious reasons.

Josey is projected to go in the first round by CBS Sports's latest mock draft. Saw a different one yesterday that had Akrum going 51st in a very strong RB class. A long way until the draft, but just shows that the draft guys think highly of these players.

32. Buffalo Bills from Chiefs
Josey Jewell, LB, Iowa. Jewell is on pace for his third-straight 100-plus tackle season, and he has proven to be able to make a tremendous impact as a pass-rusher and in coverage. He currently has 7.5 sacks, five interceptions, and 19 pass breakups in his career. He can do what Sean McDermott wants from his weakside linebacker.

It's unclear why the Bills got rid of Jonathan Williams in favor of Mike Tolbert, but they'll need to find another young running back behind LeSean McCoy.
