There was an unrelated Title IX investigation in 2015 on accusations of sexual harassment by team members. As I understand it (which could be wrong) the investigating body informed the team without naming who specifically was the subject of the investigation. This cast a cloud of suspicion over the entire team. Coach Kill, who does have legitimate health problems, quit the team at some point citing his health. His resignation coincided with the row over how the investigation process last year. In the end that investigation came up with very little. This was on top of another investigation last year over whether the Minnesota athletics department was properly prioritizing women's athletics.

In regard to the current investigation over assault and rape charges against multiple members of the team, the the football team was totally out of the loop on the title IX investigation until team members were suspended. (The criminal investigation was a totally separate matter.) It's a small wonder that both team members and coaches are not happy about the process. Ultimately, the whole disgusting episode with multiple players doing "a train" on some drunk girl doesn't leave the team a leg to stand on. The administration is cleaning house and whole thing is an ugly process with no winners. No doubt the administration will also leave in the end. The folks implementing the Title IX investigation also deserve mud in their face for conducting the whole process like an inquisitional body.
