Jeff Jenkins

Not surprising. Saw the writing on the wall I'm sure with Linderbaum ahead of him at Center plus the rise of Britt at Guard. If I remember right, he and Sampson were on the same team together at Illinois. Is Sampson even on the team? I know he didn't get a camp invite this year, but didn't know if he was still an active member of the team.

Hope for the best for all these guys.

Aside from the conversation surrounding his future in the team and ability to compete for playing time... the physical (and mental) grind of playing college football can take it's toll. Even for guys not "playing" and only practicing - you could make the argument that those guys take an even worse beating. But totally agree that you'd THINK these guys would see the value in a scholarship, if it's available.

Also, was always intrigued by Samson Evans and hopeful that he can make something out of his career at Iowa. My buddy's older brother coaches HS football in NW Chicagoland and he had amazing things to say about Evans. Long story short, he had video game like highlights and was a legit threat to score anytime he touched the ball (which was every play... from old-school, power type formations). From a completely uneducated/outside perspective, seems like he doesn't quite have a positional fit at this level.

He's a kid that probably would have thrived in an offense like Jordan Lynch had when he was at Northern Illinois and they went to the Orange Bowl. Ball in his hands all the time, making plays with his arm and his legs. Unfortunately, at the P5 level, he's kind of positionless.....

Samson was an impressive KR and PR in high school. Really surprised he hasn’t been given that responsibility.

I really thought Jenkins was going to be a great, quick pulling guard for us when we signed him. He gave it his best shot and it sounds like he was a good teammate. So, I hope he does well in whatever he chooses to do in the future.

I just heard back from Jeff. He said he is leaving the program and the university and staying in the area for work.

Disappointed but not surprised at all.

I really liked Jenkins coming out of HS. He had solid highlights and apparently was very mature and a great leader.

I did notice after his redshirt year that he didn't make that usual jump in weight that we see with our young offensive linemen. I don't know if that was due to lack of commitment to the S&C program, or just difficulty putting it on. Either way, with a budding young star ahead of you, the choice is understandable.

Wow. Quitting football and school and getting a job. I know college isn't for everyone and you certainly don't need a 4 year degree to be successful. But man, if you can get that degree paid for, it sure gives you a pretty good leg up once your'e done.

Don't fully agree with this. Plenty of people skip college or leave and have major success in life without racking up tens of thousands of loan debt.

He wouldn't have had debt since he was on scholarship. That's why I said "Man, if you can get the degree paid for....", meaning if he could have gutted out football, he'd have his degree which at least provides a pretty decent crutch should whatever he's planning on doing now doesn't pan out....

I don't know his job skills are but the skilled trades are hurting for workers. If he left now there had to be something or someone who set him straight about his future in football at the big boy level. I wish him well. Worse places in the world than to be in a growing area like IC/CR. Hope everything works out for him.

Playing sports at the major college level takes full commitment not just for a degree. Anything less and your cheating yourself and your institution. Good job not sticking around and wasting everyone's time. Best of luck to him.

Not to mention the grad xfer coming in.
