Paterno family to launch its own probe of Penn State scandal | Reuters

The family of Joe Paterno, angered by a report critical of the late Penn State head coach, said on Monday it will conduct its own probe of the child sex abuse scandal surrounding Paterno's assistant that has stained the football legend's legacy.
Family members said they "are dismayed by, and vehemently disagree with" findings in the report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that accused Paterno and other Pennsylvania State University officials of failing to take steps for 14 years to protect the children victimized by assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
Freeh, in the report commissioned by the Penn State board of trustees, blamed them for conducting a cover-up to avoid consequences of bad publicity that could upset donors and damage the Penn State brand.
Sandusky, 68, was convicted last month of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years and faces up to 373 years in prison.
The Paterno family said it has asked its attorneys and experts to conduct a comprehensive review of Freeh's report and comments, and "we have also asked them to go beyond the report and identify additional information that should be analyzed."
They said they asked Freeh to preserve all his records, notes and other materials "as we expect they will be the subject of great interest in the future."
"To those who are convinced that the Freeh report is the last word on this matter, that is absolutely not the case," the family said. "It is highly likely that additional critical information will emerge."
Good luck with your, uh, probe, jagoff.

And may your daddy rot in hell.

I don't blame them at all to be honest. hopefully when they find out Freeh was thorough they'll apologize and go about their business.

Not going to hold my breath though.

Anything coming out of his mouth other than saying my dad wished he had done more is not only making Joe look even more guilty than he is but also making his family look like complete and total asshats.

This is nothing more than hiring a PR firm to spin up a positive image for the dead enabler so his idiotic, heads-in-the-sand family can feel good about themselves and their ill-gotten gains.
Whiny, superficial, self-important a55holes.

I'm sure bin laden's family believed he didn't do anything wrong, either

Not sure what the outrage is here...

they disagree with the Freeh Report findings. They are trying to protect the image of their father, who they feel is being treated as the fall guy for this since he's dead and can't refute any of it himself.

Not sure what they hope to get out of it, as I doubt there's any evidence out there that would exonerate Paterno. If there was, the family would have shared it already. Paterno apparently didn't use email so there's no paper trail of his own words that would make him look better. The only emails that exist are from Curley/Spanier/Schultz that describe their meetings with Paterno or relaying what Paterno told them.

Joe not using email is false.

The problem I have with the talk of JoePa being made a fall guy. By definition the "fall guy" takes all the blame so others can get off without punishment. The Freeh report did not exonerate the other 3 primary parties it simply lumped JoePa in with them and the Paterno family did not like this.

Too bad it is time to stop trying to spin the fairy tale as no one will buy the fantasy anymore.

I would never criticize anyone for defending their father. That said, Jay is wasting his time here. The public's opinion has been pronuonced. The family conducting its own "investigation" just comes accross as desperation and will have anything but a positive effect.

The whole thing has to be so surreal for them. One minute your last name is a key to the golden city, the next its a scarlet letter and the patriarch is not around to provide any explanation, if there is one to be had.

I keep seeing this statement and it is 100% absolute BS. If it was your kid that got molested I guarandamntee you that you would criticize Jay Paterno and certainly if any of Sandusky's children defended their father.

Also, why is it that the only musicians that are being honored with SN's are one's who's music absolutely suck monkey junk. Springsteen and Diamond may be the 2 most overrated hacks in the history of music. May as well go with Ke$ha or Nickelback as an SN.

Even the Paterno attorneys are telling them they need to shut up! Everything Jay spews out of his mouth and the actions he is taking keeps making matters worse.

I'm sure it would be hard to, on a dime, disavow everything you believe about someone, particularly your father. I think it would be better at this time, however, to do your own "investigation" behind the scenes, and not is such a public way. He's just opening himself and his family to public scorn - it comes off as nothing other than a PR effort to rehab his dad's legacy, even if he believes it's for an otherwise legitimate purpose. The outcome of it won't matter to anyone anyway, except to him and his family.

The actions of Jay, and the Paterno family just go to show how deeply ingrained into the Penn St. culture the Paterno entitlement and control was. THEY just KNOW the truth, and everyone else should just accept it. Doesn't matter what facts show, it only matter what they tell us to believe.

I don't claim to be the smartest man on the planet, but I think you missed what I said, while at the same time, drafted a sentence that is a bit hard to comprehend. I am merely stating that I empathize with a person standing up for their parents. Its a subjective thing. Maybe you don't feel the same. Whether or not my child was involved is irrelevant. I may have more of a visceral reaction, but I can still see where the support comes from. Its the same thing when I see parents on TV claiming their child never could have done "X", yet the evidence is overwhelming. Its just the nature of parents/children.

Springsteen/Diamond on par with Nickleback/Kesha? Not even really sure where to go with that.

It's very clear from my perspective. You said "I'd never criticize someone for defending their father." I said that's BS. You would certainly criticize Jay Paterno for defending his father if it had been your child that was molested.

Do you really blame him for going to great lengths to try to prove his Father's innocence? I know that's what I'd be doing if I did in fact think my father was innocent, and unless I had first hand knowledge that he wasn't I'd probably be a little biased.

Not trying to defend Jay Paterno here but I can (sorta) see where he's coming from.

EDIT: Just as a disclaimer, I have not actually read the report so if it's 100% clear that Paterno did in fact cover things up, and there's no way that Freeh could have distorted facts then I retract my statement.

Tough question. But it appears with all the evidence that has surfaced it is tough fight it. I may have hired my own investigation but I don't know if I would have went on ESPN and discount everything in the Freeh report and made myself look like an idiot. Had he not done that and just announced he was hiring his own investigators just to satisfy his own curiosity along with his family then I might have understood. His problem is there are so many people around him, the Penn State community, that want the Paterno's exonerated. Image how happy everyone would be if evidence came out that Paterno had some mental illness that started back in 1998 that clouded his judgment. They want to find some way, anyway, to justify why Paterno help cover this up and have the blame pushed elsewhere.

Jay needs to watch anger management movie with Jack Nicholson and follow what happened when he went to Lakers game and got ejected for harrassing Eddie Plightower :D
