Jay Scheel done with football

Tough decision to make but given the mounting injuries, hard to blame him. Wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

That has to be incredibly frustrating for him. Already battled back from 2 knee issues and this is the 3rd. If he were my son I'd advise to hang them up as well as this point. A lot of life yet to live, and everyone has to move on from playing at some stage in their life.

Well shit. I was always hoping he'd breakout into the star that his high school tape and ranking showed him to be, but the poor guy could just never stay healthy. Props to him for making such a tough decision.

That's rough news. I'd like to seem stay connected to the team in some way. Maybe as a manager of some kind with some pay. Tough way to lose a scholly.

Injuries just never let him be what I thought he could be (well, and the OC maybe)

Never had the stats, but forever a Hawk.

I thought KF honored schollies when career ending injuries occurred ?

I guess this is why our highest rated WR recruit since Keenan Davis never panned out. What a sad thing for Jay. Hope he heals and has a long and healthy career in something other than football. Once a hawk, always a hawk!

This is why it's nice when local prospects stay home. Had he gone out of state to play and this happened their would be no homecoming. It did not turn out like he or us fans wanted but he went down a Hawkeye!

that totally sucks. I was so looking forward to seeing him tear it up at some point, the kid is a great athlete. Best of Luck Jay.

I hope by now the athletic department has endowed a grant for injured athletes. That way the grant pays out your degree and the University can stand by its scholarship. This would allow the various sports programs to retain active scholarships for competitiveness.

This. This is correct. KirFer will honor a scholly to a young man; even if he ends up injured. Whether it be in high school or college, the way KirFer runs the program is with high class. That is why I have tremendous respect for the guy. That is why I don't disagree with the "no visit policy". If a kid fully commits, KirFer will fully commit to him... throughout a career (while many other schools would not).

This is an example of that.

They do, but I don't believe it counts against the scholarship limit at the point where it is a medical issue like this.

Yep, pretty sure he gets his school paid for and they get his scholarship opened up, as long as it is medical.

Really feel badly for the kid. Damn. What these guys go through to play football in a power 5 school is beyond belief. Best of luck to a very fine young man, and thank you for your contributions to the program.

Another scholarship open......hopefully someone who can make something of it. Can't afford misses like this. No one to blame...but...invested a bit into his potential. I just can't believe J Smith didn't rise up. I mean...wow. We don't have ANY athlete in the program we could switch over? Lets recruit more speed....More db's and WR...that can position switch when called upon.
