Jay Higgins Returning for 2024 Season

My seats at Kinnick are fairly close to the field, and from the first game this year it was clear who the leader of Iowa's defense was going to be -- even tho it was his first game as a starter! All season long he was the conductor of the defense, calling signals, motioning players to get in the right position...and then the tackling -- omg, the tackling. Perfect form on almost every tackle, covering the field sideline-to-sideline. It's just impossible to overstate how important he was to Iowa's defense this past season...and if he stays healthy how much it will mean to the team in '24. Wow.
The one area he can improve on is pass coverage -- and this may be the one area which raises questions about his ability at the next level -- but Angerer was not great in pass coverage either, and he's made a nice living in the NFL.
Glad some NIL boosters stepped up...these decisions are not being made in a vacuum.

This is perfect news. He would've been a low round draft pick from the sounds of it. He's certainly made the choice that'll be more fun for him this next yr. $ wise hard to tell what he's getting from NIL compared to being what a low round low guaranteed $ draft pick might make. Regardless I will assume Jackson is coming back too or why else would they explore into him even getting the chance to otherwise. So now we wait on Harris Shulte and Cooper to decide.

It's pretty wild that they can just about all but run it back from last yr. Is Logan Lee the only starter on D that's for sure not coming back as of now?

NIL is what can get kids to come to your program but culture is what'll get them to stay. Iowa has that 2nd part nailed

That critical pick late in the Nebraska game was 100% off a Higgins audible. All the players and coaches credited him for it.

When I saw that play I was like was Hurkett even supposed to be where he was? Cause he was like 10 yards downfield right smack in the middle of it. But he just reached up and caught it like he was a DB. Purdy obviously wasn't expecting him to be there. So yeah hell of a call by Higgins and play by Hurkett who was our leading tackler that day too.

How many backup DEs lead the team in tackles for a game and make game changing interceptions at the end? Only at Iowa baby.

Now if Coop and Luke come back to settle some "unfinished business" pinch me cause I have to be dreaming. Just don't wake me up.

I can send one of my girls over for a wake-up call

Yep. Anymore when the TV is on, I've got it on METV. I find more enjoyment watching Adam-12, Hogan's Heroes, Andy Griffith Show and the rest. The westerns are on during the day, so I never get to see them because of work.

Joey Jewell same thing and he’s an even better linebacker than Angerer. NFL teams will find spots for guys like that on 1st and 2nd down.

Now there is news that Nick Jackson has been given an extra year of elligibility if he wants it. I don't think he was expecting to get an extra year, so it will be interesting if Jackson decides to use it or not.
