It's over

Gary Barta met with players on Tuesday. Multiple players told Barta they would transfer if Lickliter was the Iowa coach next year. Lickliter was given the chance to resign, he's not going to do that. Lickliter will never coach another game for the Hawkeyes. The money will be worked out and then Iowa will announce it.

I'm just curious about your sources and who is saying what. From what I've read, a lot of the players want him back. In fact, GazetteOnline is reporting that Payne may leave if Lickliter is let go. The DMR has an article that says Gatens isn't leaving, Fuller is going to be back, and May supports Lick as well. That's the nucleus of next year's team.

I'm neither agreeing or disagreeing that Lick should go in this post. I'm just curious as to where you're getting your information.

GO HAWKS!!!

Ya and I remember Jake Kelly saying he wouldn't transfer. I haven't heard anything like the OP but what the players say in front of a mic/reporter isn't exactly reliable

Did it ever occur to you that Gatens and Fuller are coming back because they know Lick isn't?

And if Cully leaves, that is fine with me, I can stomach a few more turnovers a game by a new point guard easier than another 20 loss season by Lick.

Maybe the quotes from Gatens, Fuller, etc. about being back are because they have inside information that Lick is gone, so they can say I'll be back and not look like they were about to leave. That way the fans don't question their loyalty going forward.

As for Payne -- I am glad he is loyal to Lickliter. He also has less time in the program than the players that were rumored to be leaving so maybe he is still a little naively optimistic.

This concerns me and not just because I like Cully.

If Cully leaves does Brust not come? If Brust doesn't come does this recruiting class fall apart?

I see we were thinking the same thing you must type faster than me.

Seriously though, what do you expect these kids to say. They aren't going to come out and say "It's the coach or it's me" to the media. They are going to be respectful and provide generic answers.

I have heard enough through the season to be 100 percent confident there would be transfers(beyond Brommer) if Lick returned. I can understand wanting to see proof before you believe something. I would just advise you to be cautious before you take what these kids say in the paper as being the 'absolute truth'.

Just my opinion.

I think Brust would have to redshirt if he does not come. And he can only receive a scholarship if he is released from his letter of intent he signed in November.

I believe once Lickliter is released all of the recruits are no longer bound to the letter of intent. Even if that was not the case he could transfer and be on scholarship as long as it was not at another B10 school

How many threads do we need on the same thing? Its obvious that everyone has heard the same story. Time will tell if its true or not but to just keep starting threads with the same info is getting a little old

I think Cullys immediate reaction might be loyalty to Lick, but, if a new hire came in,and wanted him to stay, if he is the right guy, he could re-recruit Cully to iowa.
Let face it, Cully has committed to DePaul,Bama and now Iowa,so it is not like he grew up dying to play for a certain coach..like Lick.

The way I look at it, we can either have a mediocre season next year with lick, then fire him,and face this transition crap the following year,or do it now,and get it out of the way next year, and then have process further along the following season when we have the renovation of CHA done and the new facility opened...timing is everything, and like with Bo Ryan coming to wisky just as Kohl opened..we need the new blood flow at Iowa to coincide with the new facilities.

Lickliter doesn't release the recruits the new coach and or AD does.

I quickly researched the rule and if the athlete does not receive a Qualified release from the school he signed a letter of intent with he can receive aid and practice with the new team but he must sit out one year and losses 2 years of eligibility.

What are the players suppose to say...I won't play for this guy, and then he stays? IF Cully is here just for Lick then see ya.

I agree a new coach could convince him to stay however saying Cully is not committed to a coach is misleading. He committed to DePaul right after Wainwright got there. Payne was 14 I don't think that accurately reflects his character.

The only reason he decommitted from Bama was because Gottfried was fired. So in that case he was more committed to Gottfried than the school.

I looked online and all I saw was that they lost a year of eligibility but I probably missed it. Either way I can't see Barta not letting him out of is NLI after Lickliter gets fired.
