It took Johnny Orr four seasons

to win at ISU, finally going 16-13 and 6-8 to get a bid for the NIT. Could Lick (assuming he's not already fired) do the same next year at Iowa?

I could see the cupcake games that we lost this year turning in to wins next year, so thats 2 more wins...it would take A LOT of improvement to win two more league games next year so thats 4 more wins next year that I could possibly see. Still below .500.

Maybe, but Lick is no Johnny Orr. Johnny excited the fan base with his incredible personality and exciting style of basketball. Everyone loved Johnny....he was truly a one of a kind guy. I was never an ISU fan, but I enjoyed going to Hilton just to watch the show....from the here's Johnny intro to watching him work the refs was worth the price of admission.

To this day, Johnny has never met a stranger....he calls everyone "coach" and just has a way of making you feel important.

That's why Johnny was loved at ISU and Lick isn't at Iowa.

Did you watch any games this year? What could possibly make any rationale person think we'll be above .500 next year? The Big 10 is getting deeper again and I dont care who we have coming in for recruits.....I'm sure the other schools are recruiting and recruiting better than us......I'm surprised you didnt bust out the Coach K comparison.

What comparison would that be? It turns out "Lickliter" is actually pronounced "Zhickvashki"?

people have loved to point out Coach K's first three years at Duke in some feeble attempt to relate it to Lick

True...they fail to realize this isn't 30 years ago and the money's too big to be THAT patient unless you've always been a doormat...Iowa has pride and a good history...Duke before Coach K...not even close.

Whoa, dial down the hostility level. I was too young to remember Orr and I really don’t watch a lot of basketball anyway, but I knew there is plenty of people that did (remember Orr) and do (watch basketball) on this board to see if there was any similarity to their situations. There is no right or wrong answer to this question and you have an opinion it cannot be done – great.

2boys – good info, thanks for your response.

Gosh PJ...I thought you were older than that. Even Hawkeye fans love Johnny...he's just a good guy with a great personality and a great story. He's good friends with Hayden and he's the bridge that lets Iowa and ISU fans drop their hostility and...oh wait, ISU fans never drop theirs...bittermen...

There was nothing like watching Johnny enter the court with 2 minutes before the game started with the "here's Johnny" theme playing by the band. He would be pumping his fist firing up the crowd and the place would go nuts. The visiting teams many times would just stop and watch in amazement.

He would always end his introduction by walking over and shaking the other teams coach....they would literally just shake their head, laugh and smile. It was obvious the respect they had for the excitement he was able to create.

And to think Johnny wanted no part of the "Here's Johnny" intro when they started doing it...he thought it took away from the players...but he eventually realized that it was another cog in building "Hilton Magic".

Shane my first college athletics memories are the '81 Rose Bowl and 1980 consolation game loss to Purdue so I'm old enough (40) to know all that but I don't recall much of anything about ISU athletics. So when I said I don't remember Orr I meant the specific dynamics of what those 1980 to '84 years were like at ISU for Orr such as was he on the hot seat? was improvement being made? did he have the AD's support? etc.

I see now...I'm 40 as well and I just remember being a big fan of Johnny and his persona the same way I liked Hayden and his persona...I don't have any knowledge of the pulse of CycloneAreaCode during Johnny's early years other than everyone seemed to love the show, if not the team's record during those first few years...I don't recall him ever being on the hotseat, but as we both know, there wasn't the same access to that info back then.

Even I laughed when they pulled their schtick with Johnny Orr and I have to admit a bit jealous. Johnny had such a personality.

Whatever could Iowa could do with Lickliter to be truthful to match something like that? He is so introverted. He doesn't even want to go on the I-circuit and meet Iowa fans...he just wants to be left alone and coach. He comes off as having the personality of a limp carrot to most people. Perhaps he is a nice guy and fun to talk with but how would anyone know? Thus, 4,000 to 5,000 attendance...
