The LEAD: Biggest takeaway for me was showing toughness after losing 10 point lead at the end of the first half, and striking quickly to open the second. That was a huge difference from the slow start in the second half against WSU and the collapse at the end of the first half against Va Tech, which lead to a deep hole early in the second. It was a big step for this club.
The HIGHLIGHTS:
Marble was very good at the defensive end. Not just his own man-to-man defense, but his help defense was good too. He didn't shoot well, and looked out of control at times, but I thought he set the tone with his intensity at the defensive end.
Can you say enough about Clemmons!! That guy has an edge to him. His defense was good too, but he calmly hit key basket after key basket in the second half. Give Caff credit: he found White two years ago, and Clemmons this year.
Woody is providing an offensive threat in the middle. That is huge. It opens up so much for this team offensively. He certainly has a lot of work to do, namely adjusting to the physicality of the college game, which certainly will be a grind all year. But there is no doubting the impact he has when he's on the floor.
Gesell was not anywhere near good in the first half, but he it seemed he was where he needed to be at crucial spots in the second half. He still needs to be more aggressive and attack the basket off the dribble, but he was very steady in the second half.
The BACK PAGE:
White was steady as usual
May - 8 minutes; McCabe - 10 minutes
Basabe and Ogelsby provided exactly what this club needs off the bench: energy and 3 pt. shooting
