Is there any pro sport with worse officials than soccer??

Not even close. NFL officials have the hardest job and they do pretty good. NBA is a joke, but at least they seem somewhat consistent. Hockey and baseball are outstanding at officiating. I am amazed at how many absolutely horrible calls I have seen in this world cup. The US' 2 disallowed goals, Englands goal that was not awarded, Argentina player offsides by about 3 full yards and goal is allowed (and I'm sure many others). I think FIFA needs to make a serious investment on properly training officials, and they 100% need to get video replay, because obviously the refs on the field are incapable and seemingly incompetent. I will care about soccer again in exactly 4 years, hopefully things have changed by then.

Referees have never been any better before it's just now with replays and thousands of camera angles and other sports going to video technology the errors made by the refs now are magnified. Don't blame the referees; blame the FIFA officials who have the technology and refuse to utilize it. I can understand most of the calls that have been made; it's hard to determine offsides in the heat of a play when everything is bunched up in the box and you have to keep track of when the ball is kicked as well. The only one that really bunches my shorts is the foul.

Soccer doesn't need replay. But it does need a goal threshold detector like hockey. Regardless...Deutschland uber alles. England is lucky the Germans didn't hang 6 on them.

It's probably cheaper just to use replay. They could have reviewed that one call by just watching a replay on the big screen.

just have the 4th referee - who is in communication with the head official on the field - have the ability to use a monitor and help for situations like the two horrible calls. No changes, no equipment, other than the ability to override.

i witnessed several horrible officiating calls in Kinnick v. Michigan a few years back - soccer is not the only sport with a history of poor calls...but those two today could be game changers. instead of 2-2 going into half, it is 2-1, and the mental game can go with a result like that from an official. same with the argentina initial goal - mexico lost it mentally after that goal. a shame.

#1 - head referee - guy on the field
#2 and #3 - linesman - one on either side of the field
#4 - is the referee on the side, keeping track of subs, keeps track of time, etc. he could easily be allowed to quickly consult a monitor and have the authority to communicate a missed goal (for example) to the main referee. no extra equipment needed.

Dude, Cricket is terrible. I can't even begin to count the number of times the knicker has clearly - clearly - overhurled the wickets, only to have the officials rule it a side-out and turn the busker over to the advancers. It's atrocious.

NBA is the worst

you know what league has great officials considering all that is asked of them? the NHL

I am not a huge hockey fan, but watch the officials during a game one time, wow

they catch a lot of stuff that nobody else in the building even noticed

Soccer officiating is horrible, and that is the way FIFA wants it. It stirs up controversy. FIFA likes controversy, because it in turn stirs up conversation about the sport.

As a wise man once said, "The only bad publicity is no publicity."

The sequence at the end of one of the early games in the NBA finals where on like 5 straight possesions the refs had to go to the monitor to see who the ball went out of bounds off of was awful...thats the problem with replay, it gives the officials no impetus to do their job...robot referees who take their instructions from some guys watching 50 different monitors is probably not far off...
