Is there a downside to having great fans?

Bowls love Iowa because we flock to Bowls (with the possible exception of Pinstripe) which usually gets us a better bowl than maybe we deserve. Example Outback possible this year. For the most part that's positive but the downside is we generally get the better teams in the bowls and end up losing. LSU in the Outback would be a very tough matchup. Love the location and the Sun but not so high on losing another bowl game

That and having so many fans who flock to bowls that are so meaningless that NFL prospects won't even play in them means that it's tough to push for more success than that.

Lol. you're acting like it's some kind of epidemic.

Name the last four Hawkeyes who have skipped bowl games.

I'll wait.

It just started to be a trend last year.

I mean, I could try to give you a list of people born in 2019 as well if you're going to demand proof from the future.

Absolutely. The money keeps pouring in and allows a douche canoe like Gutless Gary to keep his job, in spite of failure after failure.

We are going to see more of this... It's just a fact. I'll be more surprised if we don't see a player(s) not sit out of playoff games too. Those players are playing 1 or 2 extra games right? There's just too much $ at stake. It's all perspective and what shoes your in. Of course we fans want em out there till the bitter end. Coaches as well. But the players their agents in the wings and NFL sure don't They want them to be 100% for them to get to see in private workouts and combine and all that they have them do. They could care less how they do in a bowl game. They already have 3 years or more of tape on them. There's no way to prevent what happened to that Jaylen Smith a few years back other than just not suit up there's just not...

It is just the way things are now. Not like Noah is the first around the country to do this and the trend will just grow around the country as time goes on. If it were the Big Ten title game tomorrow I am sure Noah would have been all in.

Please tell me you have been highly critical of Fran also and many times have stated he should be fired???? I just want to know to what degree on the hypocrite scale you place yourself?

Iowa has been pushed up in bowl matchups for a while, they used to handle it better

Absolutely. I'm still in favor of firing Fran. I don't think he's a very good coach. What's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

I think the downside is that it allows people to keep jobs longer than they probably should because ADs don’t want to derail the money train that is Iowa football and basketball.

Revisionist history sometimes overlooks the fact that Iowa football in 1992-1994 was a complete dumpster fire.

16-18-1 overall with a B1G record of 10-13-1. And these many of those losses were beat downs. 61-21 @ PSU, 49-3 by Illinois at Kinnick. Only bowl game was 37-3 loss to California to name a few. Fry was completely safe.

I still remember going to the season finale in Kinnick in 1999. Basically the lowpoint of Iowa football in my lifetime. Going into that game against Minnesota Iowa was 1-9 overall 0-7 in the B1G and the paid attendance was 55,000 that day.

Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, & Illinois would kill for those numbers in a great season.

Then get better. I’ve never understood this mentality. Ferentz and barta have it as well. If we avoid competition, then we can stack wins and pretend to be good. The hell witth that. Load it up and step up in class and let’s see what we have, what we need and what we can be. It’s the constant woe is me bullshit that has me turned off to this program

Fry had reasons. He lost successful assistants that were sought after.

Missing ingredient. Iowa gets better teams due to the playoffs and the Big moving up. Last year not. Also they've been paired with better teams that don't travel well so move down.

A couple of games under .500 overall, as well as in conference, is hardly the definition of a dumpster fire. Obviously since you said that is the low point of your lifetime you have no concept of what happened between the time that for Evy left as head coach and Hayden Fry showed up.

Somewhere in there is the definition of a dumpster fire, but the mid-1990s we’re not a dumpster fire by any stretch the imagination. You show your ignorance, and lack of historical context, by saying it was a dumpster fire.

Reading comprehension must be a rough spot for you. So I’ll type it again since you’re older than dirt and probably struggle with life in general.

The lowpoint of of Iowa football in my lifetime was not they Fry years I mentioned. It was 1999 when they were in the middle of a 13 game losing streak. If your preFry Hawkeye experience has that beat that, so be it.

I've thought about this before as well. It seems like Iowa regularly gets upgraded to a better bowl than they likely deserved so their opponent is stronger than Iowa deserved. That being said, Ferentz is 7-8 in bowl games at Iowa so either they're actually playing to their level or they're beating teams they shouldn't be. Not really sure.

I've seen anyone from LSU, to Kentucky to Texas A&M projected in the Outback bowl. If Iowa gets there I wouldn't mind playing Kentucky....Mark Stoops is their head coach so there's a major Iowa connection there.

After NW's decent showing against OSU tonight I kinda think they'll be slotted for the Outback though. Iowa to the Holiday. But who the hell knows.
