Is The Blueprint Out There Now?

Each of our losses we had pretty much zero transition game. Our guards lack of quickness was exploited in each of those losses. I said it before and I'll say it again, our transition game masked some very ugly 1/2 court offense and a lack of a go-to guy for quite some time now. Honestly don't see that addressed with recruiting either. Fran really, really needs to score an offensive minded JuCo guard who can consistently create for himself and others before next year or this team will again be middle of the pack. Also, what happened to scoring on out of bounds plays? I swear we used to score on 70% of them, but now I can't remember that last time we did.

I don't have a problem with the quickness of the guards, but other teams are stopping there dribble drives to the hoop. What my problems are is there lack of willingness to pass the ball into the paint. There were a number of times I seen Olaseni and Woodbury have good post positions on there defender and Gesell would look another way. Heck one time Olaseni was wide open waving his arms for the ball. The outside game was not working yesterday but the inside game was, and Iowa was beating them in the paint. They should have kept going inside.

Agreed. It's like we have absolutely no idea how to make a good entry pass into the post. This, though, is one of many glaring issues right now.

Yes Izzo showed the B1G how to beat us, protect the paint, foul when our guards drive to put them on the line, slow transition and the game in total, and most of all let the Hawks shoot from the 3pt line.

I think you have heard announcers, talking heads all talk about the ceiling for this team, you have also heard them talk about our lack of go to guys, and our scoring droughts. Which to me are one in the same. Unfortunately just like a play making wide receiver in football this is not going to be an easy fix for Fran. Also I think you are now seeing a scout being developed on Iowa. You have seen it with the last 4 games, PHYSICAL, double down on any penetration, stop transition, and run big bodies at us and foul us and roll the dice on free throw shooting, and having a scoring drought. Right now the recipe is working.

I believe we have some glaring weaknesses that are showing up now that we are grinding out games in conference. Our guards aren't quick on either side, craft blew past them at will last night and the only time we did the same was when OSU whiffed on a steal attempt. Our passing and general decision making is poor and lazy, this could be fixed tomorrow as these are just stupid mistakes that are getting worse. Finally, I have no clue what or offensive scheme is, we don't get a fast break we shuffle around or we jack up a 3 with 25 seconds left on the clock, awful. We have talent and plenty of it, we are just on tilt, time for Fran to prove his worth by fixing this.

Craft blew by Devyn....who seems to think he is in the NBA...NOT...how is he going to play at the next level...he cannot guard a 1 or 2 spot in the NBA.

Blueprint?

13% from 3(with mostly great looks). 60% from the line(if your looking for answers to about 4 of the losses, right there). Analysis over.

Everything else is conjecture from a frustrated fanbase. Justifiable but over exaggerated.

Yeah, we have weaknesses, anyone who didn't already know that hasn't watched many games. Those weaknesses are amplified when you shoot as poor as the hawks did. People saw the mountain top and now are in a free fall.

Frustrating as he//, yes...but good grief some of you.

We'll be fine. Unless, of course, you thought we were a legit final four team without some flawless play for a 6 games.

Bball board has become the fb board.

Winning is great, losing sucks. Some folks can't handle either.

This. It's painfully obvious that this is as much of a factor in these losses as anything.

Yes, blueprint. Why do you think the 3 is left unchallenged for us so often? It's b/c opposing teams dare us to shoot it b/c we are a poor perimeter shooting team. Why do you think we're hacked with such frequency? B/c opposing teams know we struggle from the line. Teams have figured us out. If you haven't noticed that, I don't know what to tell you. Our poor shooting was not a one-off; poor shooting is, and has been, the norm for this team. Nearly losing 3 straight games to inferior opponents (yes, MSU minus Payne and Dawson is inferior this year to Iowa) with 2 of those games being home contests does not make me feel like we'll be fine.

16-3 when we score 70 or more points. 1-3 when we don't. The 4 games where we didn't? B1G league games. It's B1G basketball kids, plain and simple. Iowa has to learn how to win games in a grind it out fashion.

Iowa came into yesterday's game shooting 37% from behind the arc. That'd put them in the top quarter of all NCAA teams in 3PT shooting. We had an awful night last night, but Iowa is not a poor 3PT shooting team.

The press isn't a great weapon against teams with strong guard play. MSU handled it easily. It didn't bother OSU.

Should have banged it down low more last night because it's becoming apparent that Hawks just don't shoot it real well.

Yep, you nailed it. Stop our transition game and you see a pretty limited half court offense. And then? And then? And then? We lose.

Mike has to start knocking down some three balls. He was the quickest player on the court last night, but if he can't make anyone respect his outside shot he won't be able to get to the bucket as much as they need him to.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard Iowa is undefeated in games where they made 5 three pointers. If true, that makes sense. If they can hit shots, they can play with anyone.

it's easy guys -

this team - when facing a tough defense - can't score - especially from outside.

if iowa does drive to the hoop, foul. team shoots under 70% from the line.

You know what's really crazy, if we would have shot our season avg from the ft line last night...we win....

Here is the blueprint: We have beaten the teams we were supposed to beat, if you look back to the predictions prior to the start of the BT season. We beat Nebraska, we beat Minnesota, we beat Northwestern (twice) whereas some thought we would lose at NW. We split with OSU, and that was bass-ackwards...win away, lose at home. No one thought we would win in Madison (well, almost no one); the loss to MSU at home was tough, but not necessarily surprising as a pre season prediction; same deal with Michigan at their house. We won at Illinois, which was not a popular pre season pick. So, Iowa is just about where we thought they would be when the year started. The disappointing thing is that they are a better team than we thought they would be...but, they have not yet learned how to win, or learned to believe they can win, the tough games. The meltdown after the OSU game last night is predictable, because that is what this message board does. Sometimes its simple: Iowa was cold in terms of their shooting and played poor defense in the second half. OSU looked dialed in and committed; Iowa looked flat footed and disinterested. Don't know why, no excuses, just my observation from the stands.
