Is The Big Hurt a first ballot HOFer?

I admit I am not much of a baseball guy, but Frank Thomas is easily my favorite player ever. That being said, when you look at the numbers, my vote is yes, he should be in on the first ballot. The dude was a natural beast.

Big baseball fan, big Frank Thomas fan because of what he did and how he did it on and off the field, but not really a White Sox fan. Having said that, I sincerely hope he gets in on the first ballot. The only thing that will keep him from it is the amount of time he spent at DH, simply because there really isn't anyone that played a lot of DH in the HOF. Molitor, maybe Jim Rice I guess, but without looking at the numbers, I don't believe they played the number or percent of games at DH as Thomas. Again, I'm a huge fan of his and of him getting in on the first ballot. I honestly think he will get in on the first ballot, but just my opinion.

This is dicey, not sure how I feel about this, if FT is a first ballot HOFer does that mean McGriff/mattingly get in? Is Jim Thome a 1st ballot guy?

maybe it's because i'm not really a baseball fan, but i don't understand what's the big deal about 1st ballot or not. if someone's a HOF'er they deserve to be there. why does it take 10 ballots for some guys to get in? or why would you not vote for Thomas this year but then vote for him next year? that just doesn't make sense to me.

This I agree with.
It is stupid. The guys that get in after like 10 years are really ridiculous.

It's just egg-headed sportswriters making their points.

For the most part i agree with this, i do think at some point, not sure when, we are going to look at the steroid era differently. Also, a lot of the baseball writers/voters are getting up there in age and we will be getting an influx of younger writers(voters) who have a different perspective on things.

First of all, remember that voters can only vote for 10 guys per year. Voters vote for the guys they covered or liked and against players for other reasons, such as their inaccessability to the press or drug/cheating suspicion, etc. Also, many voters refuse to vote for players that are on the ballot for the first time. They will also leave guys off that are automatic so they can vote for other guys. i'm not saying any of this is right on their part, but it happens. They are sportswriters and they have their agendas. i totally agree that, if they are hall-of-famers, they shouldn't need more than one ballot, but in such an imperfect system, i think they need extra chances to get in. 15 chances? Too excessive IMO.

Yes. Thomas should be a first balloter..

"Thomas, however, is in a group with Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams. The group requires you to bat at least .300, hit 500 home runs, drive in 1,500, score 1,000, and walk 1,500 times.

Pretty impressive. The batting .300 category is where you lose a lot of guys you'd think would be in there. It's pretty surprising what players did not or are not at .300 or above for their careers.

In looking at that group, one sees what puts Thomas in the slugger category, but what does not put him in the swing for the fences category.

Essentially, it puts him in the "one of the most feared hitters of all-time" category because of the fact that he would not help you out Mark McGwire or Sammy Sosa-style, on three pitches, but at the same time he would hit the ball just as far as them."

Definitely. Before Miguel Cabrera came around, I considered Thomas hands down the best hitter of my lifetime. No question he's a first ballot guy.

Update!

Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux, and Tom Glavine were all voted into the HOF today.

Loved the Big Hurt, favorite player growing up.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't he play football with Bo @ Auburn?

I am a big Cubs fan but I always admired Frank Thomas with the Sox and seeing pictures of how big he was when he was first drafted by the Sox I firmly believe he had nothing to do with taking PED's. Putting the Big Hurt in the HoF is well deserved.

lulz at Palmeiro getting less than 5% of the vote and now being unable to be on the ballot again.

He is one of only a handful of guys to amass both 3000 hits and 500 home runs in a career and he is shunned forever.

Bang your first on the table and lie some more Raffy!!!

He's actually still eligible to get in through the Veterans Committee (the same way Santo got in). But I doubt he will.

The thing that pizzes me off about the HOF is that nobody has ever received 100% of the vote. Some crusty old little dweeb feels its his duty to keep it that way and leaves a guy like Maddux off his ballot.

Congrats to the Big Hurt! My alltime favorite baseball player...as a Sox fan, nothing better than seeing the big fella go oppo with a laser liner to right center....natural born stud!

Cooperstown is gonna be crazy this year with Sox,Cubs,Braves,Cards, Yanks fans......what a class! Thomas, Maddux, Glavine, Cox, LaRussa, Torre....wow.
