With the rumors and rage of realignment circling for the past few days, I have to wonder if the B10 is bowing to the needs/wants of UM and OSU like the B12 does for Texas. Revenue sharing aside, by putting UM/OSU in separate divisions and moving their game to earlier in the season, the B10 is basically telling the rest of the division that they're speedbumps on the way to a large payday courtesy of UM/OSU. Further more it sends the message that the powers that be at the B10 don't want anyone but UM or OSU to play in the Rose Bowl.
Delany has even said as much. In an interview with Rittenberg at ESPN.com he states:
"You could make a good argument that Michigan and Ohio State should never really be playing for a divisional crown. If they're going to play, play for the right to go to the Rose Bowl"
This tells me that the mentality of those in charge of the B10 would rather see UM or OSU in the Rose Bowl as opposed to Wisconsin, PSU, Iowa or even Nebraska. If Delany really believed in "competitive balance" like he's been preaching, he'd make them fight for their spot in the championship game just like everyone else (assuming that UM gets their program back in shape).
I have been excited about Big Ten expansion and realignment, however Delany is starting to become every bit of a double-talking politician and this doesn't sit well with me. There are some things that transcend dollars and cents, and I feel that the end of season UM/OSU game is one of them.
