Is Ken really the problem?

People criticize him for continuing to pass when we're up 10 because Stanzi subsequently throws an INT. But I guarantee that people would be just as upset if we had gotten conservative, run the ball, and settled for a FG on that drive.

While I have no problem criticizing the coaches, I don't think this one is on Ken (though you can debate how effective our 1-minute offense was).

INSTEAD, THIS ONE IS ON THE D. Jon loves to praise this D, but, outside of one good game against MSU, when has the D proven reliable?

This loss is also on missed passes, dropped balls, and whiffed blocks by O-linemen.

But those haven't been constant problems throughout the season. It's the D. Stats don't mean much here...our D just isn't great.

It isn't on the D, holding NW to 21 should have been more than enough to win against a bad NW pass D. Tell me grandma was the D responsible for only scoring 35 against Indiana and NW combined, Penn St has a horrible O and they put up 35 on NW, and Wisconsin just got done putting up 83 yes 83 and not 38 on Indiana.

I will agree, the D isn't as good as people make it out to be though but the last 2 weeks are on the O even though Iowa got a win in one of those games.

Persa played an absolutely incredible game. He virtually made every right decision and didn't turn the ball over (the int wasn't his fault). He was as advertised. A lesser QB or him playing less than perfect and they probably don't score a touch in the second half...he was incredible.

We lost the game in the first half because we didn't score and we had a terrible game plan. They had 8-9 in the box and we continually tried run and do the short passing game. Stupid. NW bet we would come out and try to establish the run and stick to it, and we did exactly that. And it cost us 5 offensive possessions. That was the game and that was on O'Keefe. He is calling the plays. KOK's offense scored 35 points on Indiana and NW. Pathetic.

Again, we have a history of not scoring a lot of points when we have a lead in the second half. And that 'tradition' has been around longer than any of the current players.

Yes! Every team knows exactly what we are going to do. We are'nt that tough a team to defend against

What I really don't understand alot of the times is our 3rd down playcalling. 3rd and short, and we throw a long pass down the sideline and expect DJK or McNutt to make a circus catch. Incompletion. Punt.

3rd and 10+ when we need to look downfield a little, THEN we throw a little 2-yard dump off pass and hope the receiver can run for the last 8 (or more). 4th down. Punt.

Sometimes I just don't get it.

And our hurry-up offense.. Little dump off passes. You can't go 80 yards in a minute doing that.

Yes.. We could still have put this game away once NW got to within 3 by moving the ball, eating the clock and maybe even putting more points on the board. But instead we could only convert 1 first down, and then NW got the ball back with plenty of time to work against a gassed defense.

I agree 100%.

But how much of that is on Rick choosing to throw those improbable passes on 3-and-short and dump-offs on third-and-long? I guess probably a little of both.

I think this is certainly true for the D. Probably for the O, too. That makes for a predictable offense AND defense. At some point, you have to change your defensive scheme. It's not always about players just "playing better" as Kirk always says.

As stated in other threads, if you think you can do a better job than KF, KOK, and Norm, feel free to email your resume and production results to: gary-barta@uiowa.edu.

Um, I love our staff but they DO make mistakes and DO have to make changes to improve.

You're saying that unless a poster is more qualified to coach they can't question anything they do?

According to that logic since I'm not qualified to be a major college basketball coach I didn't have the right to question Lick's production while he was here? That's silly.

It's on KF. Fitz schemes to beat Iowa and Iowa just keeps going in saying they have to execute and getting their ***** kicked. The definition of insanity or bad coaching is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. You would think the guy would have some self respect and actually put something into winning this game.

What bothers me is we never step on the throat when we have the chance. We were up 10, coming off two straight tremendous drives. We get the ball back with a chance to close things out and we immediately flame out on offense.
