There’s nothing quite like pennant-race baseball, and that‘s especially true when it hasn‘t been around these parts for close to two decades. The Pirates and Atlanta Braves engaged in a classic last night -- 19 innings of high drama with one relief pitcher outdoing another inning after inning after inning.

All to be undone by an umpire who apparently wanted to go home. Julio Lugo, trying to score from third on an infield grounder, was clearly out -- undisputedly out -- on a play at home plate but umpire Jerry Meals inexplicably called him safe.

I've seen it over and over. The fact that he misses the tag is ridiculious, but what I found even more ridiculious is this, just watch the umps eyes he never ever looks at the plate to even see if Lugo touches the plate, but still signals safe. Crazy for ump to blow the call on tag but to signal him safe without knowing if he even touched plate is cause for suspension. Sad stuff for someone who get paid lots of money to do his job properly and clearly it shows he is not.
