There’s nothing quite like pennant-race baseball, and that‘s especially true when it hasn‘t been around these parts for close to two decades. The Pirates and Atlanta Braves engaged in a classic last night -- 19 innings of high drama with one relief pitcher outdoing another inning after inning after inning.
All to be undone by an umpire who apparently wanted to go home. Julio Lugo, trying to score from third on an infield grounder, was clearly out -- undisputedly out -- on a play at home plate but umpire Jerry Meals inexplicably called him safe.
Horrific call costs Pirates game
For those who were not born or are too young to remember, here's a quick backgrounder on Iowa's second most favorite basketball referee (behind Ed Hightower): http://www.hawkeyenation.com/forum/basketball/7732-jim-bain-fan-club-thread.html#post88959
