Is 1-17 in conference record considered progress?

Considering I didn't think they would win a single conference game a week ago, I would say yes. I think 1-17 is where they finish. Not going to win a single road conference game and our home games are tough go here on out.

Next season must see us improve to at least 5 conference wins though. That way we can be average to below average (8-10/9-9) and out of the cellar in Fran's third year.

We still play @ Indiana.... and as I predicted a few weeks ago this will be our first road win. Sadly enough Iowa and Indiana are in a league of their own.

It is progress in the sense we got rid of Lick. Can be hard to tell at times that he is gone though with some of Lick's recruits still playing. Shows how far we have fell.

Fran's got to recruit big time to save this sunken ship.

You are right. This is what will have to change.

Are you guys happy with the recruiting thus far?

Ryno, didn't you start the 0-18 thread as well? How about we talk in march and then you can give your positive angle on the season.

As far as recruiting, yes I'll give you that I'm a little skeptical in that regard. Again though, I'll take the wait and see approach. I'll judge them when they get in a Hawkeye uniform. Right now I would venture to say that most have no clue what we have in White and Ogelsby will be a fine addition.

Who could be? Same kind of talent coming next year that we see currently on the roster.

I think your under crediting Olgesby. And I think White will provide more in the end than Brommer. But 2011 recruiting isn't over. But I dont want wasted schollie's on players just because Fran go off to a late start for 2011.

Success isn't going to happen over night. I try to key in on individual player improvement rather than whether we win this year. It's fair to say we may not be able to consistently compete with the upper half of B10 until 2012-13 season.

But the talent level of B10 goes down next year, so it's not out of the realm of possibilities that Iowa surprises people next year. But by surprise I mean at best NIT.

So Iowa will be better because the rest of the league is worse? That's improvement.

If you don't see progress and the system in play you are blind. We show flashes of playing very well...we are just playing a B10 schedule with a JV squad (talentwise). Fran is the man for the job and I really like what I see going on. I see a coach with a fire in his belly (love the T's) he sticks up for his team and guys. I think you see guys giving it for coach in-spite of the record. In my book that is progress.

I agree. It's not showing in the record, but I like what the players are ATTEMPTING to do, we just don't have the playmakers and/or the experienced roster to do this right now. I didn't think we played all that terribly last night, we just are not a very good team right now, plain and simple. This year's team is what it is, and Fran didn't have a whole lot of say in what roster he had this year.

Fran needs to recruit and add some pieces that address our needs (a good big man, and another good PG), and also keep the current players from leaving the program so that we can finally start getting a bit of continuity.

I'm not making a comparison on the talent level of this year's team to the 1993-94 team, but the 1993-94 team was pretty bad, and had players like Settles, Kingsbury, Millard, Murray, etc. and I seem to remember those guys being pretty darn good by the time they were juniors or seniors. Again, I don't think we have that same level of talent right now - just making a point to show how important it is to keep a roster together and seeing how much a group of players can improve after playing together for a few years. We haven't had that at all the past 3-4 years, and I think that by itself would help us out quite a bit. If everyone sticks around, and Fran can address our recruiting needs, we could have a fairly salty team by the 2012-13 season. It's going to be pretty rough the rest of this year, and possibly next year as well, though.

Progress is hard to see from the W/L standpoint but it is there:

1. Lick out,Fran in ...big progress
2. Basabe,Marble,McCabe, and Cartwright are all contributing, and and developing.
3. Oglesby and White are solid recruits.
4. New practice facility will be done by July.

All good progress points not measured in wins and losses.

For argument's sake, next year's squad will sure look a lot like this year's.

So, if we go 2-16 this year. 4-14 next year. Winning 9 games this year, and 12 next.

Do you really see that as positive progress, enough for Fran to keep his job?

I see it as a continuation of the embarrassment Lickliter started.

Fran isn't getting canned after two years, unless he's personally slipping players c-notes after every game for their efforts. That's just beyond laughable.

At this point we also need to point out two things:

1. No academic casualties to report.
2. No transfer rumors.

IMO those two are just as, if not more, important that your #2 and #3.
