Iowa's Secondary

The Hawks went into the 2013 season with a proven corner in Lowery & Miller at safety and two question marks. A half dozen games into the season and the secondary was labeled as a team weakness and the "negative fanatics" were out in full force. Two young unknowns - King & Lowdermilk blossomed right before our eyes as the season progressed. Early on their mistakes were obvious, but by season's end both were playing with confidence. They not only performed competently, but were stepping up and making plays at critical times. The secondary, trashed early on by the flavor of the moment bashers, looked strong by years end. The Hawks ended 2013 ranked 11th in total passing defense nationally and 7th in total defense. The Hawks will go into the 2014 season with a proven corner in King & Lowdermilk at safety with two holes to fill - similar to this season but with more potential upside. Having Coach Parker return to coaching the secondary seems to have worked out well. There could be a Fletcher/Bernstine type ready to take over and have a breakout senior year or a young talent noone's seen. I'm confident the coaching staff will patch the holes & the defense will again be a team strength in 2014. Ferentz 3.0 - buy it now! Go Hawks!!

Thanks for the pep talk, Tanner.

I agree, it was awesome the way Lowery became the lock-down corner the last 1/3 of the season that we hoped he'd be all year. Also, Des King certainly improved toward greatness after getting abused the first 1/3 of the season.

I hope you and Johnny have taken the time to personally thank Morris, Hitchens, Kirksey, Davis, Ott and Trinca-Pasa for going ape-**** on opposing QB's the last 4 games and making it so you being suckered out of position wouldn't hurt the team as much. Lastly, thank Coach Parker for recognizing his weak link on the defense and compensating for it by dialing up a more aggressive strategy from the front 7.

Go Hawks!

Since most college QBs are not accurate like tom brady and payton manning they will wilt under pressure.

Getting pressure in the face of many of these QBs will really pay dividends.

And I think the secondary is playing with better technique.

I think the pre season concern was valid. King was a GREAT surprise. But as was posted above presure on a QB sure does make a secondary look a lot better

King is going to be an absolute stud. Pretty sure tackling for a true freshman. Made lots of great break on balls. And probably the most impressive skill he possesses is his knack for raking the receiver after they've made the catch or are about to. Countless times he broke up what looked like a sure completion. That's incredibly hard to do in the heat of the moment. Excited to see how he continues to progress. He very well could be the best corner KF has had in a few years.

No Doubt. Love the aggressiveness. Phil P brings guys from all over the field

The secondary was the weakest part of the defense, we just ran a scheme that didn't allow them to be exposed. It was more aggressive and it didn't hurt that our LBs were fantastic at all phases of the game. Gone are the days of Adam Shada playing 15 yards off his man and give up curl routes all day.

only when they were out of posission which wasnt usually. Far more coverage sacks than blown coverages.

Both statements are true.

There was usually good coverage, but when there was a blown coverage, it was usually Miller and Lowery. King had a couple hiccups early, but really came on strong as the year went on. Lowdermilk was very solid as well.

The biggest thing with Lowdy and King is that they also play the run extremely well.
