Iowa's response to the finacial situation

I see where today some 40 people lost jobs along with a 5% pay cut and some furloughs (Administrators not included) As I recall Ferentz McCaffrey and Bluder took 15% paycuts in July and I think coaches took some cuts as well but received raises that more than offset? Now i'm not sure of everything that has been done and maybe someone can update for us?

Ferentz has given a lot back to the University over the years But with everyday people losing jobs and programs being cut it seems like maybe this is the time to make a major effort along with other coaches who have benefited from a very generous association with Iowa Athletics

Crap take.

Every single sport not named football or basketball has existed for generations simply because of football and basketball money. Wrestling has recently started to break even and one can even argue that they deserve BTN money since their meets get more viewership per event than basketball. The vast, vast majority of that money, however comes from football.

The only reason those kids ever got facilities and scholarships to do somersaults, jump in pools, or row boats is because of the football program. Football has a single bad year and now people are crying because those sports can't sustain themselves? Econ 101 tells you that if those programs can't pay their own way they should either 1) go the club route (which is what they were intended to be from the start anyway), or 2) not be surprised if their funding source makes cuts due to reduced income.

Somebody still needs to come up with a good reason why football should be responsible for buying golf balls and tennis scholarships. If the reason is "because other schools do," that's not good enough.

Non-revenue sports are a house of cards and now we're seeing what happens when the table gets bumped.

The biggest reason is Title IX. The next biggest reason is to facilitate a transfer payment from the athletic department to the school in the form of scholarships. Say what you will about things like golf or tennis, but programs like that can provide an additional avenue to "buy" a higher academically achieving student body with scholarships without dipping into the academic scholarships. Schools in really sparsely populated states like Iowa, Nebraska or Kansas aren't exactly dealing with a huge gene pool to try to preserve or improve their respective rankings and they spend a fortune trying to move 5 spots in them or save their asses from dropping and some of those non-revenue sports are pretty carefully tailored to further that institutional purpose.

Wow Sorry I hit a nerve Not disputing football carries the program and agree that some of the non revenue sports have to make adjustments. Probably not necessary to have the baseball team spend a week down South to start the year or for the field hockey team travel distances to play teams? I'm sure there are ways to cut costs for lots of those sports
I guess my point is that we are in the midst of a pandemic and economic crisis that impacts the lives of a lot of people and it's important for all of us to do what we can. The athletic department is looking to borrow 75 million to get by and not only the non revenue sports are at risk but maybe even the football program will likely be impacted especially if we don't play this year
I have always been a Ferentz fan and believe he is the kind of person who will do his part. Not sure exactly what he makes but I think its close to 4 million. Just seems like a good time for him and other coaches who are generously compensated to step in with a major effort for at least this year.
