IOWA MEN’S BASKETBALL
HAWKEYES FINISH EUROPEAN TRIP STRONG, WIN FINALE

FOS, France – The University of Iowa men’s basketball team finished its European trip strong with a convincing 92-78 victory over Fos-Quest Tuesday evening. The win improved the Hawkeyes’ record to 5-1 on its travels overseas.

Freshman Peter Jok, who scored Iowa’s first seven points of the contest, finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Hawkeyes. Junior Aaron White tallied 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field, including a 3-pointer, and 1-of-1 from the free throw line. Senior Melsahn Basabe posted a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 boards. Senior Roy Devyn Marble contributed 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Iowa led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Fos-Quest took a 45-43 advantage into halftime.

The Hawkeyes came out firing in the second half, scoring the first nine points the first two minutes of the half to go in front 52-45. Fos-Quest got to within 69-66 with nine minutes left in the game, before the Hawkeyes closed the game on a 23-13 run. White scored 12 of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes, while Adam Woodbury netted all eight of his points in the second half.

“We felt like we needed to step it up defensively at the start of the second half, and we did,†said head coach Fran McCaffery. “Our defense spurred our offense again tonight. I think if you look at the entire trip collectively, I don’t think we played defense in two of the 24 quarters.â€

Iowa was aggressive on the glass yet again tonight, owning a +15 rebounding advantage (46-31) over Fos-Quest.

The Hawkeyes executed their offensive sets tonight, making 54 percent (35-of-64) of its field goal attempts, including 65 percent (17-of-26) in the first half. Iowa also made 7-of-18 (39 percent) from 3-point territory, with Jok making four of Iowa’s seven triples.

The team will travel to Nice tomorrow for one last day of sightseeing before departing for the United States Thursday morning.

“This trip has been beneficial in so many ways,†McCaffery said. “The competition was good; we had to fight and compete, and came together as a team"

Here's all I care about translating to the season ...
Jok = 11/31 = 35.5%.
Oglesby = 12-28 = 42.9% (not counting the 2nd game, where he hit 5 treys but no box so don't know attempts).
Team = 34/107 = 31.8%.

Now, you look at the team's overall and think pretty ho-hum to below average. However, that % is down by lack of box from 2nd game, which was a good shooting night by both Jok and Oglesby. Still, it's much better than last year's average. Now, figure you throw out the best (11/26) and worst (2/18) games, that still leaves you with 21/63, for 33%

Iowa shoots 33% from 3 and they win 3 to 5 more games last year. If they consistently shoot 33% this season, combined with sustaining their defensive intensity, they will be a 22 win team before the tournament.

Not to mention the 3 point line over there was a foot and half further back than the college line.

I didn't even think about that. Plus when all you are going off of is tweet caps, it is hard to know where they are shooting from.

Look pal, JD just got done moving to Oklahoma.

Did you really expect him to go to Europe so you could have more in depth analysis?

I enjoyed the tweet caps.

Hey, I meant no disrespect to Mr. Miller. I just thought we could maybe get some video from our friends at the University of Iowa. They can afford to send over a grad student with a video camera.

Yeah, including one all-star team. (That team beat Kansas last year, before getting beatdown by Kansas in the second game)

Its worth noting that Kansas didnt play 3 seniors and Ben McLemore when they were beaten by this team.

Does anybody know how Temple and Alabama fared against Iowa's common opponents on this trip?

If other people on this board can pick and choose what stats they ignore so can I.

Also I don't think Iowa played any common opponents as Alabama or Temple. I believe they just switch opponents and Iowa had their own teams they played against. I could be wrong but I believe I saw the schedule somewhere, I just can't remember where it was.

lol, wut?

If you want to claim Iowa beat the same team that beat the equivalent of Kansas' 2nd and 3rd string from a year ago then go ahead.

All I did was point out that the foreign team did not beat Kansas even remotely close to full strength. If you want to look stupid then thats your choice.

Just looked it up, here are the opponents of all three schools while in Paris.

Iowa: AMW All-stars, St. Quentin
Alabama: Boulogne, Rouen
Temple: Evreux, Boulogne

The Hawkeyes were successful on 30.5% of their 3-point shots last season. I agree that 33% would give then 3 to 5 more wins, but I would much rather see them get to 34% to 35%. If Oglesby gets the touch back, and can get in the high 30's again, they could get to 34%. I just hope Jok does not go off on long shot binges and ends up in the 20's.
