Hayden Northern was hoping to land a scholarship offer from Iowa, but the Hawkeyes recently extended the quarterback a preferred walk-on opportunity.

That's asking a lot for an out off state student. If he does he'll probably be a hard worker.

What's the difference between a preferred and a regular wak-on?

Preferred walk-ons are actively recruited by the coaching staff and are allowed to participate in preseason practice, i.e. fall camp.

Regular everyday walk-ons are members of the general student body who just show up on the first day of practice after classes start. I would imagine that these are extremely rare.

usually the stories about the walk-on who gets a scholly and becomes a starter or major contributor was a preferred walk-on. basically it is saying if we had a scholly we would give you one. but we dont so would you like to play for us anyway.
