The TOs and missed layups were frustrating, but, overall, I came away impressed with this team despite the loss.
Very good ball movement and motion, and Jan seems to have them a little more focused and locked-in on both defense and proper blocking-out technique than what we have seen at times in the past. Not in a huge way, but you can tell there has been an emphasis on both.
Can't say enough about this freshmen class. Not just ability, but the enthusiasm and camaraderie with which they play. It's going to be fun watching them grow together.
IMO, the key to this team is Addy O'Grady. At times you can see the improvements in her game and conditioning pay off, but at other times she falls back into kind of a passive wallflower that mentally is a step behind everyone else. If she can continue to develop her focus and intensity, this team could make some big-time noise come tourney time.
Positives So Far: I think Lucy was as good of a portal win as possible. O'Grady has take a huge step forward. Freshwomen showing lots of talent. Team D might be the best since Vivian. Lots of backdoor cuts and layups in offensive sets.
Negatives: Non of the vets besides O'Grady have stepped up - most even stepped back. Way too many TOs, even in wins. Offensive set aren't freeing up shooters for open 3s.
I think the team will improve a lot between now and March Madness.
The UI could make a lot of money by making a single video of all the different types of turnovers which were made during yesterday's game and market it with the title: "Don't Do This! Turnovers to Avoid."
28 turnovers -- and the variety was impressive.
The Hawks are going to have to find a 3 pt specialist and start running plays for her. McCabe is the logical solution -- her 3 pt % is awesome. But they never run a play for her, as they do for post players, and she played a total of 12 min yesterday. It's going to be very difficult to continue to win in the BTen without 3 pt shots.
The Vols' relentless pressure finally took a toll on Iowa's players starting with 3 min remaining in the game. At that point Olsen dribbled a ball off her leg, and on the next position let a pass go off her hands....that's fatigue, and she really laid it all out there, because without Guyton on the floor she's gotta be the PG AND the primary scorer for the team. I'm surprised more women's squads don't press in waves like TN does -- it's gonna create a good share of turnovers vs most teams.
You sound like an isu or nebraska fan. The real reason for the loss is simple: Pts off TO's due to Tenn relentless very effective press. Two horrible calls. Likely cost Hawks the game. Typical poor officials.
Agree with everything in this post. I was shocked they didn't upgrade that foul to a Flagrant. It's one thing if you're going for the ball and are close to hitting the ball and catch the side of the face. But that defender never came close to touching the ball, and Lucy got nothing but a full arm shot straight and hard across the face. "Intent" is unknowable, and I thought anything like that would be an automatic Flagrant. They need to revisit the policy if that's not the case.McCabe is hesitating. Just needs to let it fly. Maybe Guyton needs more PT because she doesn't have any problems with letting it fly. Syd needs to get back in her groove because a stat line of 8 rebounds 2 points and 7 turnovers isn't going to work. I'm sure she's probably ticked at she played and will pick it up.
I would like to the NCAA do something about people getting hammered in the face. Just a common foul my butt! That play where Lucy about her head knocked off was a terrible call. It's giving a green light for anybody to smack players in the face and say ........I was going for the ball! Hey you missed the ball by a mile take a seat on the bench for the rest of the game! To me that was intentional the whole way. Got to hand it to Lucy for getting up off the floor on that hit.
Wrong sport. I was talking men vs MichYou sound like an isu or nebraska fan. The real reason for the loss is simple: Pts off TO's due to Tenn relentless very effective press.
This is where cc will be missed the most. Her crazy vision, accurate get ahead passes, and ball handling skills. All Iowa needed to do the other nite was show they could break the press & score quickly to make tenn pay. This would’ve forced tenn to back off. I can only think of one time the whole game where Iowa accomplished this.I was a little disappointed Iowa couldn't find any adjustments to handle their press. Quite a few turnovers from getting impatient and making bad long passes down court, along with just bad passes in their half court sets. Definitely a learning experience for all involved.
