Iowa programs independent...

I was reading on BHGP that the regents have given UNI and ISU until September to come up with a plan to be independent of tax funding for their Athletic Departments.

I believe UNI received about $4.5 and ISU about $3 million from the State last year (if I have that correctly). There probably is no way that UNI can make up that kind of money and probably ISU so what do they do? UNI probably has the biggest problem and they have the most successful program (compared to ISU).

I don't live in Iowa anymore but if I did I wouldn't mind supporting UNI. ISU is large enough to take care of themselves. They, like Iowa, belong to a large conference even if they don't have the benefit of the Big 10 Network. They should be left to defend for themselves. I would think they have a large enough alumni base that alumni should be able to help cover costs.

Their other options are raising season tickets, cutting their athletic budgets, recruiting budgets, dropping programs, cutting pay of coaches, raising student fees considerably, and probably more.

To do some of those though will make them even more uncompetetive in the Big 12. But if ISU wants to pay salaries commiserate with other Big 12 schools the school can't expect taxpayers to pick up the tab when the State is having problems. The regents are correct in that aspect, especially when Iowa has cut ties and is not getting any taxpayer money for its athletic department.

Pollard wants to play in the same game only he wants the Iowa taxpayer to bankroll ISU to stay in the game and the Regents have now said he has to bankroll his own game.

No wonder he didn't fire McDermot. He can't and if the regents go through with this, which they should IMO, and ISU has a bad year next year, Pollard will have even more trouble firing anyone...

I would think this ruling forces UNI to drop wrestling. Things would be much easier without Title XIX. Are any of UNI's programs able to support themselves?

Looking at their website, they only have these mens sports:

Basketball
Cross Country
Football
Golf
Track & Field
Wrestling

There's not much to cut there. I can't see them dropping wrestling. Can they raise student fees enough to cover the reduced money? Wow.

I would think they cut Golf and Cross Country and that allows them to cut other women's scholarships.

An easy fix would be for the Feds to exempt Football, the money-maker, from Title IX.

Could never happen, though.
