Iowa LB Djimon Colbert Comes Up Big in First College Start

Wow...I can't believe this thread didn't get any play. Great article Rob. I have to tell you...I thought he played outstanding. A couple of plays that stood out to me were the goal line play in the first ISU series where he shoots the gap and saved a touchdown...quick move through the crease in their OL. The other was a crossing pattern by Montgomery where Colbert tracked him and made a sure tackle just as Montgomery made the catch. What struck me is that Montgomery was moving and the pass was perfect in stride, but Colbert was right there to make the play. Those are the plays that hurt Iowa, and when you get Montgomery in the open, it's trouble. Colbert didn't allow that...out comes the punter.

This is going to be really interesting how the LBs line up Saturday. You now have fierce competition with Colbert and Welch. I'm not sure how you can take Colbert out to be honest. Speed, size, and the game wasn't too big for him...this was Iowa State after all. He wasn't making plays on Sam Brownlee...no offense Sam.

My thought is that you may end up with Welch moving inside...but I also thought Hockaday's play was outstanding also on Saturday. This is going to be interesting...but I'm feeling much, much better about the LB position. I'm sure there will be growing pains to come (Wisconsin)...but the future glimpse of what they can be has been exposed.

Thanks for reading.

I guess some folks would rather talk about how bad the offense has been. ;)

Competition at LB is a good problem to have. It was a question mark coming into the season and a few guys have stepped forward and played well through two weeks. I also think there are some up-and-comers with Doyle and Benson, who have shown well on special teams.

It's nice to have a dominant D-Line to help these guys settle in and keep them clean to make plays.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year. What if Wade is the real deal, and they shift Niemann (jr next year) to MLB, Colbert (so next year) at WLB, and Wade (jr next year) at OLB? That would leave 2 talented srs (Welch and Jones) off the 1 line of the depth chart. Of course, as Hockaday has shown, that can change in a hurry.

Those 5 would be a great start to a 2-deep, and then you would add young guys that have already generated buzz in Doyle and Benson, along with potential in McDonald and Campbell. That seems like a lot of talent, and it should bode well for depth and special teams excellent if all can stay on campus and keep improving.

The future is bright at LB. When you look at what we will have coming back on the entire D next year, we should be even better, and we look pretty damn good so far this year.

I'd say Niemann is too versatile of an athlete to keep inside. He's like his brother in that he can both cover speed in space, as well as come up and be a force against the run.

I like Colbert! LB size with cover skills of a safety! Defense is gonna be deep and talented across the board next year. With another year of seasoning, the offense can get it all figured out, could be a very special year. But the schedule is also tougher next year. I really like how this team is shaping up. Anything we can accomplish this year is just icing on the cake.Wisconsin is gonna lose a lot next year and the West could be ours for the taking.
