Iowa high school state tournament brackets

A lot of tough weights. I would really like to see them use a seeding system. It seems like a lot of the times you see what should be the finals match happen much earlier on. It would get the right people at the top of the stand.

Here are a few potential second round matchups that would be worth the price of admission in 4A:
112--Clark (SEP) -v- Hathway (ICW)
Koeth (ICW)-v-Trizzino (Bett)
189--Gadson (WE)-v-Knight (Urbandale)

Clark would see Thomas of Valley in the second round followed by Hathaway in the semis if they both make it.

Gadson and Knight will be great.

I cant say that I would be a hugh fan of seeding this tourny not enough head to head meetings or common opponents for that matter. The system has worked for this long why fix it.

Thanks Hawks1010--I must have read that one incorrectly. That will be a great semi, if it happens, as both are ranked in the country. I have a rooting interest with this one, as I graduated from high school with Cory Clark's Dad.

As for as seeding the tournament, I agree, it would be extremely tough. Like you said, not a lot of head to head and everyone not seeing all wrestlers in the State. If you are going to be the Champ, you have to beat all comers, so your "seed" should not matter. Now, that the tournament is a double elmination, if you lose in the 1st round, you can still wrestle back all the way to 3rd. It used to be, that if you lost in the first round, the guy that beat you had to win in the 2nd round.....or you were done.

Actually it used to be if you lost in the first round or second round (quarterfinals) the guy that beat you had to get all the way to the finals for you to wrestleback. They only placed the top 6 back then so the finalist had 1st and 2nd, then they each finalist beat 3 guys for a total of six guys going for the 4 remianing places (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th). The losers in the semi's had first round consolation bye's while the other 4 went head to head. Then the winners of the consolation first round wrestled the semi losers and after those matches the winners went for 3rd/4th while the losers went for 5th/6th.

I think that with no seeding of the tournament, the current system is much better, as a 1st round loser has the chance to wrestle all the way back to 3rd.

I agree, I don't care that they don't seed because as you stated if you are going to win a state title you are going to have to beat someone pretty good and it doesn't matter if it is in the first round or the finals.

My main point was under the current system if you lose in the first round you know you can still come back for 3rd, but under the old system if you lost in the first round you had no idea if you were going to be able to come back until after the guy that beat you either lost (knocking you out of the tournament) or made the finals and this double elimination system is much better as you know you still have another match after your first loss.

I guess the reason I would like to see a seeding is for the people that wont win it. Obviously if you plan to get a title you have to beat everyone no matter what, but I think it would be better for people that are likely to place below that. If you are good enough to get 3rd, but you see the 1st and 2nd best guys in the first 2 rounds, you wont even place. Its not a real big deal and I agree it would be very hard to do, and it doesn't need to happen, but I think it would help the lower medal guys.

The main thing with unseeding the tournament is that we could have two nationally ranked wrestlers (@ 112 in 4A) face each other in the semi-finals instead of the Finals.

Hawkeyescott--agree with you too. Losing in the first round, and knowing that you have at least one more match, is MUCH better than having to depend on the guy that beat you.

Not only are you depending on the guy who beat you but you have to cheer for him to make the finals so you can wrestle back and I have seen it where you are cheering for a guy to win and score points for his team that could cost your team a state title because you needed him to win. Yes the new way is much better because if you lose the first round you now don't have to cheer for the guy that beat you to win and score points for that school.
