Iowa Football Tickets STILL a Hot Item

Hawkcentral had an item on Tuesday talking about Iowa's football ticket sales for the 2011 season...I will admit to being surprised at some of the numbers and quotes.

Iowa sold out it's season last year on August 6th, which was the first time folks in Iowa City could remember every ticket for every game being sold out before the season had began.

Iowa sold 59,000 tickets last year via season ticket sales, or some sort of ticket package sale. The remaining 11,000 tickets went via student season ticket sales.

Before the 2009 season, Iowa sold 37,000 tickets via season tickets to the general fan base and faculty and staff, plus another 10,500 season tickets to students.

This year, Iowa is holding back 11,500 tickets for students and 4,000 tickets for opposing fans. Some of those opposing fan tickets get turned back in, and are available a few weeks before the game they were returned from.

The HawkCentral.com article said that "between 95 and 97 percent" of season ticket holders from last year have renewed for this year, plus an additional demand of 7,000 seat requests "from new customers, people who got mini-packs last year or season ticket holders who want additional seats."

Use the 57,000 season ticket number (not student tickets) from last year and multiply it by .95 and you get 54,150 season tickets already purchased for the 2011 season...at a minimum. The Michigan and Michigan State games are already sold out. Iowa will offer three game mini-packs with the Tennessee Tech and Louisiana Monroe, plus either Northwestern or Indiana.

Those will likely sellout, because Indiana is Homecoming and the Northwestern game will be played under the lights. It's also hard to imagine the Pittsburgh game not being a sellout.

Again, I am a bit surprised by that, but I shouldn't be. It's only normal for there to be a bit of a pull back on season ticket sales following a season where expectations were unmet. However, Hawkeye fans are not your typical fan base; they are a rabid bunch and they have stepped up yet again, despite a 'down economy', high gas prices and the fact that every one of their games will be televised in HD.

The article also mentions that Iowa will be mailing out requests for road game tickets this year. Tickets to the Nebraska game (if you can get them) will cost you $72. The highest price ticket? Iowa at Iowa State, which will cost you a cool $92...but I have already written that article and beat that topic to death on the radio. I know that game looks real, real good on my 50 inch Sony in HD.

I was hoping to get an extra ticket this year. I guess we'll see how my priority stacks up. I'm a bit surprised at the demand.

Hey I would take 2-4 of those Nebraska tickets for that price. I would love to meet up with the inlaws and then watch the Hawks "welcome" the Huskers into the B10. Might have to just go see the inlaws and see about a scalper huh?

Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong angle, but don't all the top programs in the country sell out their entire season well before the season starts?

Don't we consider ourselves one of the top programs? I know I do. Being a top program is more than winning games, it's having a fanbase that doesn't lose enthusiasm after one down season.

I expected Iowa to sell out most of their games again this season. However, I didn't expect the demand to be near what it was last year, in late May.

Going on a realistic 36 years now, learned it from my daddy. Sure I paid more attention here or there, I was young and had other interest. But I could even go back futher to being around 4 and watching the Hawks, but I dont remember a whole lot about watching those games with him until I understood the rules to the games and such.
Ya know whats funny the Wiskey rivalry was a big thing back then to. And OUR bowl, the Rose Bowl.

I applied for season tix, for the first time, on 3/29 (and paid the $10 to merely apply)....haven't heard a peep.

Season ticket holders tell me the first sign you are annointed with tix is when your credit card is charged...then you have to call the ticket office to figure out where you're sitting.

Hmmmm

This is terrible news. I have a call into HappyChef. Texted him, too. I feel like a major doosh grovelling like this but I thought for sure all the fair weather proles would jump off the bandwagon after last season and I would have my pick of season tickets.

Seff - I've been crushing brews with you at Kinnick for a few years. Who the hell's tickets have you been using?

Yes, we certainly have crushed quite the number of union-free Coors yellow's. Also, chased away any potential girlfriends, got a buddy tossed in jail making him chug his spiked Bloody Mary, watered the shrubbery nearby, cut in line at the pissers, got 101 a b!tchn party tent, polluted the air with cigar smoke, polluted the air with loud music, and polluted FB with a few of our bodacious pictures...oh wait..I digress...to answer your question...

I've scalped/purchased from a third party every ticket for every game I've been to, home, away and bowl games. I've grown weary of panhandling like a prole...I want to live like you do on game day.

Relatively certain you'll be able to score tickets to every game at below face this year. Only game that might be a problem is Northwestern.

I would never pay more than $50 for the ISU game, home or away. What a ripoff. Can't believe that game is more expensive than PSU and Neb.

Haven't we averaged about 7-8 wins a year under Ferentz? I doubt that is considered a top program in most people's eyes. Aren't we coming off a disappointing season last year(I know...I know...we won a bowl game so all is forgiven). Didn't we have a multitude of off season problems? I think the fact that the demand is high says a ton about our fanbase.

Exactly Burky. Plus I think the fact that next year's (2012) schedule is going to include home games with Nebraska, Penn St., Iowa St, and UNI people don't want to give up the tickets for a down year for premium home games.

I'm not surprised. Until we have a down trend for several years, why bail? Perhaps younger fans are more fickle, what-have-you-done-for-me-lately fans that change allegiance with the wind, but you either are a fan of the Hawks or not.

So unless a season ticket holder's economic situation has changed, why would you not renew this year? Having your children's activities to attend could certainly keep you away.

It's been over 3 years since we've lost a game by more than 1 TD IIRC. We are putting a good product on the field. We had several epic battles in Kinnick last season, but unfortunately we lost in the final minute of 2 of those games.

I'm guessing most season ticket holders over the age of 35 who've had tickets for a few years are in it for the long haul and one season of unmet expectations isn't going to change that.
